I'm currently a third year dental student, during my first year of dental school I was hit with some serious family troubles. I suffered through major depression due to the loss of my mother. I ended up failing a course during my first year and came back having to repeat the year. Once I came back I excelled in my classes but my GPA and rank is averaged together with my failing first year. Throughout my time in dental school I have become highly interested in perio, however I fear with the huge blunder on my transcript there's no way I could even think about specializing. I do love general dentistry as well, but feel that if the circumstances were different I could pursue this speciality. Also I was wondering even if I worked as a general for a few years could I decide to come back to school and apply for a speciality? Thank you in advance.
