I am mulling over what to do at the end of this year. Currently a CAP1 and I like what I do. However personal things have come up that demand I be able to be in two places at once so this current training situation will not work without putting incredible strain on my personal life. I had read somewhere you could withdraw after CAP 1 to work as an adult psychiatrist and come back within x number of years to finish fellowship training. Is this true? I have already searched for CAP 2 spots where I need to relocate too and had no luck.

You wouldn't be the first or the last to just do one CAP year and end their training there. You can sit for the adult general board and you have 1 year of CAP under your belt which might be very advantageous career-wise. I think the problem with this split training is that different programs have different curriculum (I assume that CAP fellowship has minimum ACGME core requirements). These requirements might not be split the same way at other programs making your extra year left a bit of a nightmare at another program to fit into their schedule along with the unlikely opening of a single PGY-5 CAP slot for you. Good luck!

Yeah just talk with your program director about it directly. They're not gonna hold any hard feelings against you for personal stuff coming up that would make you need to leave fellowship early.

They may even be able to give you options like come back to the same program in a few years if you're able to finish up your last year or they can talk to a PD closer to where you're going to relocate. Honestly, CAP fellowship spots are not generally in really high demand, so if you're a decent fellow and have the support of your PD, they may be able to just make something work for a spot in the next year or two at a program nearby.
