i am applying to both md/phd and only md schools..i have finished everything besides the 2 md/phd essays..can i take off the schools that i am applying to for md/phd and just submit the application so it can be processed and then add those schools that i am applying for md/phd later? is that allowed? thanks!

As someone who was taken by surprise by these essays, I have the same question.

You need to write all of your essays before you submit.

If I remember correctly, AMCAS does not allow any content revisions after you initially submit your application. This means that, while you could go back and add extra schools later if you send the application to your MD-only schools first, you could not go back and fill in those essays once you have submitted. If you want to apply MD/PhD, you need to write all 3 essays before you hit the submit button. Good luck.

As far as I know (and I should know, having done exactly this last year), that is incorrect. If you submit only to MD-only schools, AMCAS will accept the application. Then when you add your first MD/PhD school, the MudPhud essays appear. You can be verifying while writing the MD/PhD essays. I'd call AMCAS just to confirm, but it worked fine for me as AMCAS said it would.

Interesting. I was obviously too paranoid to try it, but it's pretty cool if they make an exception to their "no edit" rule for things like that.

I just called and they verified this. Though, I still feel paranoid.

Tell me one thing - how are you planning to explain why you applied to both MD and MD-PhD programs to the adcoms?

you could tell them you're planning on applying for the Md/PhD after your first year, if you feel you're competitive... or how about telling them the truth?

Why wait? It shouldn't take all THAT long to write those essays right? I'd just take a week and write them up and send them all at once.

No idea. I'm guessing they would.

Regardless, I just submitted my MD schools. I added my MudPhud schools right now, and it's giving me the option to write the two new essays, so looks legit.

Schools can't see where else you apply, or if you are applying MD only or MD/PhD anywhere else until some much later date (April I think) when they will be able to see where else you have been offered a place in the class. They will know that you have asked to be considered MD only for that school, and might ask you about that. I can say that I was asked in each and every interview "If you could only get one degree, which would you choose?" so be prepared to answer that one (and if MD is your answer, which I would guess it is, than applying MD only makes sense).

The loophole to this is places that ask you to print out your AMCAS and send it to them with the application. (UIC did this last year) If you send someone the student copy of your AMCAS, they will be able to see everywhere that you applied. (This seems obvious, but I didn't realize that I had told them every school that I was applying to until I was sitting there in the interview and they asked me about other schools on the list.)
