I've read so many posts regarding experiences with attendings and how they don't look forward to them.

My question is to the attendings: Do you really "pimp" the interns to the point of harrassment?

If an intern is able to do his H&P well and then move on to present the case in front of you in the format prescribed, what more can you expect?

Please give your opinions.

You'll survive, you'll see, believe me.Just know your stuff, stand up straight and don't let anyone intimidate you1 Best of luck to you!

That's a leading question. No I've never harassed a student. But then I'd wager few attendings think they have harassed anyone and they don't think they're malignant either. Do students ever feel harassed by attendings? Sure, happens every day.

I can expect that not only did they do the basic work of the H&P and presentation but that they are able to understand and explain the pathology involved and to explain it. I also expect that they can explain the differential diagnoses and the plan for the patient including diagnostics and treatments including the strengths and weaknesses of all of those modalities. Then when they are weak in various areas I expect them to listen and interact as I teach them about those deficiencies.

If you think being able to do an H&P is enough then you should have been a midlevel. If you're a medical student then you are paying to have the attendings recognize your knowledge gaps and fill them in. To not do so would be a disservice.

Attendings are just like any other group of people: Some are incredibly nice, others are unkind bullies - but the majority are normal people who have their good days and bad days.
Some attendings are satisfied as long as the student/intern/resident just shows up and has a good attitude. There are other attendings who will never be happy with you no matter what you do (or who fail to communicate clearly what they want you to do). You can never be sure what kind of person you willl wind up working with until it happens. All you can really do is try to look for a program that seems resident friendly and where the admins seem to be on the residents' side.

I've looked up programs that are "resident friendly" and "IMG friendly" but it seems the only places that i've seen are near the bronx. 😱

no offense to any NYers but I can't stand staten island. Its the dumping ground for NY city.

Many AMGs hate those places as well which is exactly why there are lots of FMGs in those places. Not everyone can train in San Diego.

???None taken since I'm not a fan of Staten Island myself, but what does not being able to stand staten island have to do with resident friendly programs in the Bronx? (not that there are a ton of hospitals in the bronx, Monte took most things over).

A vast majority of IMG's that do their medical school training in India that don't do that well on their boards end up going to either some community hospital near the bronx or in staten island.

Its basically like "mini-India" all over again considering 50-60% of your fellow residents are indian, your attending is Indian, and your chief is Pakistani.

Foreign Galore.

Hah, thats true. But there are some community hospitals near SD in cali that are IMG friendly but have a good number of AMG's.

If a residency spot is unfilled though regardless of AMG / IMG ratio, it has to be filled that year right?

No. Sucks for those left behind in a program which didn't fill but it's not like there's a rule that programs have to fill.

Not saying its a rule, but the fact remains that there are plenty of unfilled spots each year in various programs and that it holds good that with a mediocre score on the boards, someone will eventually get somewhere in some field or the other.
