Hey all! I am currently entering the final year of my undergraduate studies. My major is in Psychology however I am reconsidering my path in life. I have always had a love for animals and science so I have been researching a career as a veterinarian I am wondering if it is entirely too late for me to make this drastic change? I currently have a GPA of 3.8. Realistically, what courses do I need to take to be competitive for veterinarian programs? What other sorts of things would make me competitive? Also, I would love to hear from anyone else who has been in my similar situation. Thanks so much!

It's too late. You have to do psychology now. No choice.

🙂

Realistically, the courses you need to take to be competitive are whatever pre-reqs are in place for the program to which you want to apply. It's up to you to look at what schools you'd want to go to and start taking those pre-reqs. Depending on your science background, you may need to extend your undergrad time to get that done. You would need to accrue at least a few hundred hours of veterinary experience (shadowing, volunteering, working in a clinic, whatever).

The best thing for you to do is to go to some vet school websites and browse their "prospective student" information to get an idea of what's required. Many schools have information on the statistics of recently admitted classes so you can get some idea of how you stack up stat-wise.

First, go do some shadowing with vets to be sure you would actually enjoy the career. No point in changing your major and starting to spend $$$$ on a bunch of pre-vet courses if you find out that you don't even enjoy the work.
