I did not too good on step I 223

SO i've been strudying really hard for step 2
just took it yesterday. My last NBME was 248

because I have been putting everything else off besides studying for step II, I am just starting to work on my Applications now.
Is it true that most spots fill their interview slots really fast? Is it even worth applying into derm at this point, if all the interview spots might be filled. Should I just apply in something else, or do I still have a chance at derm???

thanks

have you completed any derm rotations? what about LORs from dermatologists?

interviews won't go out until later, early november at the earliest. but if you haven't started your app and don't have any LORs yet, then it is getting kinda late. you have to be the judge on what you wish to apply for.

Echoing what mohderm brought up, if you don't have some pretty strong support on the inside (a home PD or Dermatologist) or some decent research experience, you'll just be some applicant who didn't do that well on step I and submitted ERAS on the late side. Are you AOA? How did you do 3rd year?

I don't want to assume you don't have good support in the form of research or LOR's though (and when I say LOR's I mean the things that go along with it like dermatologists or others making phone calls on your behalf).

If you don't have those supporting stats, then applying this year may be a bad use of your funds. If you really are set on Dermatology, you could maybe try to get a year long research fellowship to bolster your CV.

It is not too late to apply. However, if you haven't already done derm rotations, have LORs, etc... then you likely will not match this year.
I just submitted my application a couple of days ago, but I have been working on everything else (research, good grades, lor's) for a long long time.

thanks for your replies.

My grades in 3rd year all high pass

except
honors in Medicine
and honors in Psych

I asked for letter already, but the dermatologist hasn't submitted it yet. My derm advisor promised to do a chair's letter as well, but hasn't done so as of yet.

I met with the chair once, however he barely knows me and am pretty sure won't go to bat for me.

Your grammar is a bit...off. Are you foreign? Your personal statement might be a weak spot. Make sure you have several people read and critique your personal statement before you send it off.

Agree with asmallchild. Your first shot is your best shot. You should complete some research before attempting to apply.
