I'm a 21 male, turning 22 soon and I have a full time job at a pharmacy because I thought a career as a pharmacist is what I wanted to do. Along with working full time I've been going to a community college mostly part time. I'm in a bit of a complex situation and I want advice.

My GPA isn't the best here.. I have a 2.5. It's really difficult for me to go to work full time and go to school. I have not wanted to go to school these past couple of years but my mom has forced me, which isn't doing me any good. I work full time because of our families financial issues. Both my parent's work part time, our house was foreclosed, and I have an alcoholic dad. i do my best to study in the library when I can but studying or doing any kind of work at home is impossible. My dad watches his movies down stairs with really loud volume and my brother plays CoD all day next door at loud volumes. I also can't focus nor do I have money for adderall. I'm not trying to complain here, life has it's challenges, but I just want you guys to understand what my situation is really like here and why im having difficulties.

Despite aiming towards pharmacy and finding out it's not for me, I have been able to get one good thing out of it. We happen to have several doctors who come to buy their drugs from our store and over the past 2-3 years I've talked to them many times about what their jobs are like and what not. My ex's mom was also an MD, and I think this is legitimately something I want to do. I like the concept behind a pharmacist in a retail store, but these damn companies just care about money, and numbers from different reports. Over the years as I've worked this has only gotten worst and at this rate I'm not sure if the future of a retail pharmacy is going to be for me hence why my choice. Plus I like to diagnose and problem solve so that attribute I think will help me, and how I like to take my time to help people which is a big problem at my current job.

With all this said, I know if my family's negative influences were to be removed then I can succeed. I've always wanted to join the military but once again my family has held me back from something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I recently found out about the scholarship programs the different branches of military have and I'm interested because I get to serve in the military and it can offer me the opportunity to save my life. I know they all require some sort of commitment which is no issue for me since I would love to join but im wondering if I do take the time and money to retake classes and raise my GPA, that I could still get into a school for MD or DO because this is my top pick..

I'm also a little uncertain of whether I should go with the army or navy. If my understanding is correct with the army you join the army's medical school and for the navy you have to get into a medical school they approve of and they pay for your school and upon completion you then serve 7 years? At this point is it too late to even bother with all this?
Should I just look at another career because it seems like most schools dont like retakes which is what I would have to do to raise my GPA.

I've seen a couple of counselors and have talked to them, but they weren't really helpful hence why I tried googling and was brought to this website. Thank in advance.

Yes. You can do this. It'll take you a couple years. Find yourself a post-bacc program... but I think before you do this you should take a year of pre-reqs, like bio, chem, physics, orgo I and II and english. Do really well in those, then do a formal post bacc and get some volunteer experience in, as well as shadowing. This might take you until you're 25... but if this is what you want, you can do it. Good luck! :luck:

You can get more information about this in SDN's Military Medicine Forum at http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=72

I just got into D.O. this cycle and I'm 26. I will be 27 next year during my MS1.

You have time; just get your head into the game. Do what's right for YOU. Move out, seriously. Your family will survive; even if they have to change their lifestyle, they will survive.

p.s. Air Force.

Concur with Air Force (provided you're physically fit...1/3rd of American kids are overweight or obese.)

I had a friend who was in the Navy, on a tin can in the Pacific in the 1980s, and he said it was like "being in jail, with a chance of drowning".

And always remember that recruiters will lie through their teeth to make quota.
