I am planning to do two Peds AI and my home institution is one of my top choices, so I am not going to schedule away rotations. I've talked to you guys a couple weeks back about my schedule and now I am a little worried about getting enough letters.

Basically, I am doing
1) Peds elective in Aug to get a letter or two
2) Peds Sub AI in Oct
3) Home EM in July
4) Away EM in Sept

Now my questions are... is it too late to do the Peds Sub AI in OCT? Is it too late for the grade to go into the record? and is it too late to get one more letter out of it?

Also... how about the letters... For the Peds programs, aside from the letter that I plan to get from my Peds elective, I get to choose from
1) one letter from IM core
2) one letter from FM clerkship director whom I also worked with on and off for a month (he wrote me a really good eval)
3) one letter from a Peds outpatient doc I worked with for 2 weeks
4) one letter from my public health research PI who's also a pediatrician at the hospital (I don't think he likes me very much...) <-- which is also a problem here because he is in the same service as the Peds Elective I plan to take (the other attendings like me much more)

The Dean's letter doesn't go out till November so you'll be able to get in the LOR. I've heard it depends on the program and specialty, some give out IV interviews before the Dean's letter and some wait. You can always call programs that have started to give out IV's before you got the LOR in and let them know another LOR has been added to your file.

I think you will be fine as long as the October LOR is your 4th one.

Whats with all the EM? Why don't you do your peds subI instead of an EM rotation in July?

Ask your Dean if its early enough to get into the Deans letter? It may be too late.

Its not too late for letters. Generally you want your letters in before the Deans letter when programs start making final decisions about interviews. So just inform the faculty that you will want a letter early.

But I would really consider changing that schedule around...

What's with the Away EM rotation?

I am kinda torn between Peds and EM and the Peds/EM program is definitely my one of top choices.
I can definitely see myself doing Peds but I am not THAT SURE about EM. Since my HOME EM is my required rotation, I can test the idea of becoming a EM or Peds EM doc early on during 4th year. Hence, the home EM in July. Then I will do my Peds elective in Aug to get a letter or two.
The away EM is gonna be a Peds EM, so it can be counted towards both EM and Peds.
You know what I'm saying?

I mean, as long as Oct is not too late, especially for my home institution like you folks said, I think I am good to go, no?
