Hi everyone,

I received secondaries starting in mid-late August and have completed a majority of the school secondaries, except I have 13 applications left now that are over a month and 2 weeks since I received them. I just had a sudden family death happen and I have been working, going to school, volunteering, etc. so I do not have that much time dedicated to secondaries except 1 or 2 days during the weekend. Is it too late for me to submit my remaining secondaries, or should I just cut my losses and stop submitting them?

Thank you in advance for all your suggestions and advice.

I’m sorry for your loss.

It is getting quite late to submit secondaries in my humble opinion. With that being said, you still have a material chance if you submit vs if you don’t submit. Would your utility be greater if that ~1300 dollars was allocated elsewhere? Only you can answer that.

If you want to list some schools that you’re considering, I may be able to tell you which have historically early vs. late cycles and how fast the cycle is proceeding this year (if I know)

Sorry about your loss, I know it is very a difficult time but it’s time to get to work.
Good advice. It’s really late. The first acceptances at many schools are going out next week so do what @voxveritatisetluci and post the 13 schools you have left. Hopefully you have done your state schools since they are always your best chance. You also need to understand schools are into the thick of the interview season so if you are going to complete some of the remaining applications you have to do it this week. How many secondaries have you submitted already? When did you submit them and have you been marked complete at those schools?
Good luck as you move forward.

Depends on the rest of your application. You're at a huge disadvantage if you re-apply, so you better carve out some time and get to work on those secondaries, if this matters at all to you.
Echo what @candbgirl said above.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for helping me with the early or late cycles. These are the following schools that I have secondaries left:

Loyola Stritch
Michigan State
Penn State
OUWB
Hackensack
Georgetown
Albany
Rush
Miami Miller
Howard
Ohio State
The University of Michigan

Thank you so much. I have submitted about 20 something MD secondaries already and prioritized my state schools. I have been marked complete and have most of them done and completed by mid-late September. It's just these remaining 13 left, which I posted which schools above!

I think that's the tough part. I am trying to finish my homework ahead of time so I can have time throughout the week to do them. Thank you for your input.

Well I would sit down and plan out your week--you gotta prioritize these secondaries. THIS IS YOUR FUTURE! 🙂 Def organize things so that you have enough time to study for tests/quizzes and finish your secondaries. I don't remember having a lot of homework in college. Most of what we had to do revolved around being motivated enough to study for the tests. The reward for doing the assigned problems was understanding the material better, not having the teacher check it and getting points for that. But every place is different.

I am not used to this either, but I am doing my MPH right now and it's a lot more reading and writing than I am used to as a previous STEM major 😆. Thank you !!

It seemed like a good idea to list the remaining secondaries but…it might not be.
We don’t know anything about you. So here’s what I know about some of the schools.

You have a couple of schools (at least) on your list that get over 10k+ applications a year. (Loyola and Georgetown)
Howard focuses their recruiting on URM applicants that will return to their communities.
Rush expects and get hundreds if not thousands of service hours from their applicants.
Did you use the MSAR to develop your list- especially your OOS selections? State universities usually prefer instate residents. You’ve got several state schools on your list, that I assume you are OOS for. So figure out if they are OOS friendly.

Hind sight is always 20/20 but it seems to me that you have lots on your plate at this point. (Why are you doing a MPH?)But as nearly everyone has said if you are serious about finishing these applications you have to do them this week. Otherwise, go with what you’ve turned in and keep building your med school application in case you have to reapply.

I think that your best bets may be
Hackensack, OUWB, Penn state

From what I can tell there hasn’t been a a ton of interviews granted and these schools aren’t necessarily known for being “low yield” like some of the others.

Prioritize these.

Unless you're African-American, or have significant volunteering with communities of color, How rad will be a donation.

Personally, I think it's too late for MD, but you're fine for DO until Tgiving.
