Have you done any research on this at all? Do you even know what a D.O. is/does? Please go to www.AACOM.org and read. It should answer most if not all of your questions.

And as long as its not past the deadline for the specific schools you are not too late. Why did you wait so long? Why not just wait until next year and get an early jump on it?

He waited so long because, according to his post history, it looks like his MD acceptances didn't pan out this cycle.

OP, we don't take kindly to people frantically trying to apply DO late in the cycle as a back up. LECOM requires a letter from a DO and DMU requires a letter from a DO or MD. I'm assuming you don't have a letter from a DO. If you are truly interested in applying DO, please do some research, shadow a DO and apply nice and early for next year. The verification and processing time for AACOMAS is roughly the same as AMCAS and right now I would expect to wait at least 4 weeks.

Good Luck :luck:

Mr. FurFur,
I assume you are looking into DO since you were, apparently, waitlisted at several schools. You are applying late and if it is not to late DO schools will ask why so late? You need a good explanation as to why. Most D.O. schools don't look kindly on you choosing them as a backup. You need to understand their background. I, however, do understand desparation but would highly encourage you to investigate D.O. schools. Anyway, if you are waitlisted there is a chance you will still get in to an allopathic school. keep your head up and look at some grad schools as well just to be safe. Alot of schools have masters programs that require only course work (similar to post bacc) but you can get teaching stipends which would pay for school. Then re-apply. Good luck

It doesn't hurt to try. If you don't get in anywhere MD or DO, then you'll just have to apply again next year.

Obviously some of the other posters aren't very supportive if you don't know anything about osteopathic medicine, in which case neither am I. Like the others have said (understand the the history and philosophy), and most importantly make sure you'll be happy being a DO.

I applied to DO schools in September but to the wrong ones. I just added 2 more schools to my primary and submitted secondaries to the schools I'd really like to go to.

If you are a strong applicant, you should get some attention. If you aren't then beef up your app and apply next year.

If you feel comfortable with having DO behind your name, I say go for it.

Just apply and see what happens. I would think people here be little more accepting. So what that he/she chose to do it little later. Welcome to the club.

The application deadlines are in feb and march so you have plenty of time. I know some one who was accepted at one of the top 3 DO School (according to MCAT stats), the day before the white coat ceremony. She is doing very well at the school.

However, I hardly assume your friend is the norm... I would say she is an exception. The deadlines are in feb, but like our MD comrads, it is better to apply early.

I just got most of my secondaries sent to DO schools. The only thing I'm waiting on is my DO LOR. But I know my DO said he'd write me a really good one because I'm only applying to DO schools. I'd imagine most DO's are the same way, when they learn of your intentions to apply to both DO's and MD's you'll probably get a weaker letter because they'll deduce you're using DO's as a backup.

Forgot to add Porco Rosso is an awesome movie but I like Nausica of the Valley of the Wind the best.

I wish you the best of luck and do understand the predicament. But if you are going to apply I would definately make sure you talk to the DO. Money is always an issue but some DO schools do require a DO LOR. I would ask if I were you, never hurts to have it in the pocket. Best of Luck. Just keep your head up. There is always next year.

Is it too late to apply, I am interested in Lecom and are Des Moines?

Thanks

No, it is not. I have a classmate that applied in February.
