HI

I was wondering if any one might know if it's true that if you apply to optometry school with a master's degree your chances of getting in is much better vs. applying with a bachelor's degree? And if so would it matter if the master's degree is in sciences or not?? I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

I don't think that your chances are necessarily greater if you have a master's degree as opposed to a bachelor's degree. In other words, I don't think any sort of preference is given to a master's degree holder over the rest of the applicants. However, I would think that it would look good to an admissions committee to see that an applicant had decided to pursue additional education, was accepted to a graduate program, etc. If your undergraduate GPA was on the low side, enrolling in a master's program and doing well (better than you were) is one way to compensate for your less than stellar performance thus far. I think that they view a master's degree as sort of extracurricular activities. Some people may have a great deal of exposure to the optometry field... you would have a more extensive education. I also think that if the degree was in a science related field, you may find some of your classes a little easier because of your background. None of this is gospel, of course... just my opinion! Best of luck...

Having a graduate degree under your belt would without a doubt help your cause. So, if you get rejected from OD school, and then get accepted and successfully complete a master program...you will have a much better chance of getting in. So if you get rejected, you should do a 1 yr masters program somewhere and reapply. There are many 1 yr MS programs designed for those who are reapplying and have great success in getting the students in.

Or, instead of going the grad school route... contact the admissions office and find out where your application is weak. If it's your grades, ask them if you can retake some classes at night at a local CC to bring your grades up. If it's experience see if you can take the year to work for a local OD, who will also write you a glowing LOR. I'd suggest contacting admissions offices to find out where your weaknesses are.

If it's just your grades... I'm not sure you have to go as extreme as getting a masters if you couuld just retake one or two classes to bring your grades up. But, that's just my opinion.
