No, that's not true. At my wife's dental office they did sedations every day with 4 male assistants and all male doctors.

It may depend on the state, it may just be office to office policy.

I know for sure at my office I'm not allowed to assist with male doctors on sedated female patients.

Lets just say that if I was a money grubbing female/male and I saw two people of the opposite sex working on me right before I konked out...a lawsuit would be in the back of my mind.

I would think that this is a smart office policy. I have heard of dentists interviewing a female for a position in the office after hours when only the dentist is there. As soon as the female interviewer arrives she demands a check or else she will sue for sexual harassment. What else can the dentist do? He will save more money cutting her a check for 10K than to fight the suit and counter it.

If my dad had to go in for an emergency (weekend or whatnot) on a female patient, me or one of my sisters always had to go and assist or he wouldn't be able to go in. I'm not sure which states specify this in their laws or not, but I think it's true that it's office policy in a lot of places....

Even if the dentist/office manager isn't "scary wary", it's probably a good habit to get into, especially with the close proximity of dental procedures and all that. But still, you can always pull the sexual descrimination card if you're a male and denied an assistant position....especially if there's another female assistant employed who can cover.

I like your name, but I cant say I agree with pulling out the sexual discrimination card. I'm not really for that.

To the OP:
If you really want to work in that office I would recommend walking back in there and explaining that you respect their policy but know that you will be a major asset to their business because you have a lot of passion for the field and really want the experience, even if it means shadowing for a while (they will see how competent and interested you are and they might then consider hiring you). I got all my jobs that way.

By the way, you said you spoke to the receptionist. You should definently talk to the dentist. He may be more sympathetic to your situation (he was in your shoes once). And if not, there are tons of dentists out there you can work for... dont resort to discrimination charges. (This kind of thing needs to end.)
