Repeated M2 and S1: 205 - no family tragedy. Just didn't work hard enough and had a lot of trouble seeing the connection between what I was learning in the classroom and medicine until I got on the wards.

All P's (other than H in anesthesia)
Would rather not be in NYC/California. Prefer smaller cities in the south, but completely mobile w/ no geographical ties. Would have good letter for anesthesia PD, H in Anesthesia rotation.

Sorry these threads are annoying, but the PD at my school has a pretty high opinion of me and I feel like I'm going to really disappoint him when he sees my stats

The big improvement in Step 2 will help a lot, as long as you've had solid performance in core clinical rotations you'll be fine, just apply very broadly.

Consider having a backup plan as well, but I'd talk with your home anesthesia program as well thy might be able to give you some advice.

Apply broadly and go on as many interviews as possible. The more you rank, the more likely you'll get into a program.

There are lots of solid programs in the south that fit your preference of smaller cities. As people above have said, apply broadly, but your step 2 score and strong letters should get you some interviews.

I have no idea, but what everyone above has said seems very reasonable and sensible.

Not sure what others might think about your repeating M2 though? My guess is some programs might consider repeating the entire year a huge red flag, but hopefully other programs can see the pre-clinical years don't matter as much, especially given you significantly improved since then.

Definitely do-able, apply broadly (and to as many programs as possible). Go to every single interview if possible. I personally know people in similar situations as you, who gave it a 110% effort and matched at their top choice (no bs).

In terms of whether or not certain programs will see red flags in your application... no one knows man, but who cares, speculation should NOT deter you from applying anyway. You won't know until you apply, that's the bottom line.

If anesthesia is what you want, you defintiely have to be up front with your program director. Give him a succinct explanation of what happened and how you turned it around, get him on your side as he can call programs up for you too.

I know of one applicant similar to you a couple years ago. I believe that person ended up applying to over 70 programs and got ~5-6 interviews. They also did not repeat MS2. He did end up matching however. You may want to consider adding a back-up speciality if that is something you are open to. Although with all the empty spots in anesthesia last cycle maybe things are better.
