Hi, I will introduce myself. First off, I am a community college student, yup, I did very poorly in highschool, But long story short, I am looking at transferring next year into a university where I will do pre-med along side with engineering.(I know that GPA will get crushed).

Now, I don't like to be that guy. I mean, I do really well in all my classes, 4.0, knock on wood. But sometimes things need to be put into perspective.

So the question is: Is it wrong to let someone know they aren't going to make it?(MedSchool, etc?)

Basically at my school I have come across multiple people, especially in my calculus class. These people announce how they are going into engineering or even doing medical studies in the future, but then get 60s on the exam, rough average on all tests. While all I can think is, if you can't handle community college, or even get a decent GPA while you're here, chances are admissions will laugh at your application.

Same goes for my chemistry class. Some people basically make it their mission to let me and the whole class know that they will be a doctor soon. But how does that work out when its those people that score below everyone else? And they freakin act like they know everything.

I just feel like sometimes its my duty to say, Look, you won't make it, now choose something that you are good at, make a decent living and help us speed up admissions by NOT applying! Thanks!

I think I came off as a a**hole, but really I am not, I never say that, but sometimes, I wish I would put them in their place. No you're not better than anyone because you scored a 65% and just because you don't have x teacher teaching you isn't the schools fault, its yours for not learning the material.

Note: In no way am I dissing on people with low grades, I know what having low grades is like(highschool). Go ahead and try to achieve your dreams, I am only talking about those who feel like its a necessity to let everyone know that they are better than everyone because they feel like going to med school or becoming an engineer, etc, and don't show the effort/motivation/intellect to do it.

Yes I have been in a position where I've been told I won't amount to anything, so I know how it feels, but sometimes that motivation is necessary to jump start someone. I mean I had roughly a 2.5 GPA in highschool, my counselors gave up on me, and so did some of my teachers, I don't blame them, but at the same time I never went around boasting how I would be better than you because I wanted to be a doc.

Probably makes no sense. But it feels good to /End Rant.

Well, anyway, I got to go take a Calc final. Peace out.

You don't know who is going to make it. Try to be less worried about others and more worried about yourself. You say you pulled yourself around, perhaps they will too.

You are a community college student who did poorly in highschool with hopes to transfer.
Odds are so are they.

What makes you think you are better and they aren't when you are all on the same boat with the same plan?

Going to a community college yourself, you probably shouldn't be the one giving that kind of advice. They won't listen to you.

Smile, get a better grade than them and then ask them how med school went for them when they end up in your office for an appointment in 10 years or so.

I never said I was better. I said its better to act like me, and don't mention anything at all. When people ask me what I plan on doing all I say is transfer to x school for x.

Work hard, and that's that. Nothing more, no reason to boast, no reason to gloat.

I wanted to rant because I freakin hate it when people do that.

I go to community college, I don't think I am better than anyone. In fact the stigma that comes from going to a community college........

It's not your duty to tell them anything. Why do you care? There's people like that at four year universities as well. It seems like a petty thing to get so upset about.

You honestly never knows who's going to make it and it's not really your job to talk down to anyone. What you should be doing is trying to illustrate to them the error of their ways and see if you can help change their mindset.
I have several premeds like that in my classes and I go to a four-year institution. I'm at the top of all of my class and I would NEVER talk down to anyone in that manner. I simply try my best to help everyone reach their goals whether they're my friends or not so much. As people, I feel like we should help raise each other up to our full potentials rather than push each other down.

PS... I go to a fairly small school and one of "those" kids ended up being the only one to get into medschool from this graduating class. His grades weren't perfect, but what he did outside of that was amazing, and with his personality I'm quite sure he ROCKED his interview... so yeah

Crushing the dreams of others or trying to? Just bad karma.

If I were you I wouldn't bother telling those people anything if I was not acquainted with them. However, if someone talks to me in a holier-than-thou attitude with no merit to back their words up, then I will speak my mind. There's no need to take pride in what you wish to accomplish.

As for community colleges, I don't like the widespread negative view of them. Even though I don't go to one (I have taken a few classes over the summer though), I know several people who have. It really depends on the professor.

Get over yourself. Who are you to tell people they are not gonna make it? Put your energy into something constructive

You should wait until you've taken all of your upper division science and engineering classes before thinking its your place to try and tell people to give up on their dreams of being a doctor. So, you have a 4.0 right now big deal, maintaining it is going to be the hard part especially with upper division bio and engineering classes. Are you close to graduating? Have you taken the MCAT? Are you in medical school? No, no, and no. Don't be so quick to separate yourself from "them" and start telling people to not apply to clear up admissions, because when it comes time to apply you may find yourself in a similar boat as "those people" and all your high expectations didn't turn out for whatever reason. Actually saying the things that you posted to someone would undoubtedly be completely devastating to them and needless to say make you look like a complete tool.

Basically, like someone else said, don't act like you're better because of what you want to do or THINK you can do, and yes, thinking its your place to tell people to give up and clear up admissions is thinking you're better. Just stop now while you're ahead of the game and keep getting those good grades. Don't get involved in other people's lives unless you're willing to help in a sensitive, caring, and thoughtful way.

Hi Adrenaline,

I went to a community college, and I earned a 4.0 in most semesters as well. I transferred to a great university, where my grades took a turn; many years ago, I thought I was on the straight and narrow to medical school, but I ended up walking a more circuitous path than intended. The point is, the path to medical school, can be quite humbling. Try not to worry about the shortcomings of your classmates, and use that energy instead to prepare yourself for applying to medical school. You may find it difficult to maintain that 4.0 GPA when you transfer, so much so even that people may begin to approach you with the recommendation that you discontinue your pursuit of a career in medicine. I am not saying this is bound to happen, but it is not impossible either. You probably would not appreciate being told to give up on your career goals, after all - who are they to judge you? They don't sit on an admissions committee and they are not writing your recommendation letters, so what value will you take from their judgements in this hypothetical situation which I posit? The same applies to you and your classmates in community college. Sure, some of them might not have what it takes. But that is for them to worry about, not you. Now, if you have a friend who is struggling, then you could involve yourself, but proactively so: instead of being discouraging, you could tutor them, or help them identify study strategies that may yield better scores. I digress from my point though; for those in whom you have no investment (i.e.., your classmates who you are convinced don't have what it takes to make it to/in medical school,) reserve your judgement, and instead, focus on making yourself the best applicant that you can be.

Good luck to you.

🙂

I can understand your frustration at other peoples' egos or naivities, but oftentimes when we have a charged emotional reaction to other peoples' shortcomings, that mirrors one or more of our own.

It's probably true that your classmates could use a reality check. Are you the one to give it to them? Maybe. Maybe not. Furthermore, if you actually WERE to say something, it would probably evoke defensiveness rather than change.

Focus on yourself, succeed on your own path, and when they see you succeeding, they will come to you for help. Until that time, keep your head down, be humble, and have your eyes on the prize.

Stop dwelling on the things they're saying and worry more about your own grades. You'll find those people everywhere, not just in community college.

Its funny because your at community college, which is definitely easier than a major university. I did community college credits in high school, 21 to be exact where I earned a 4.1 (because they had A+'s weird I know) anyways, its safe to say that my GPA is no longer a 4.0 ever since I've been at my university. I still get good grades, but its relatively easy to do well at a community college.

Long story short, stop being arrogant because you have good grades at your CC because i guarantee you'll be humbled next year when pulling a 4.0 won't be as easy, and if you can't handle a small classroom of hopeful doctors just wait till you get a class of 300 when everyone thinks there going to be a doctor

Oh and you do sound like a big old A-hole, taking a giant dump on others dreams. Ever heard of upward trends? You might go to a university and get a 3.0 and they get a 4.0 at a university and i hope they come back and tell you crap like you are
