Is JMP (berkeley) selective?

I mean--does everyone who gets UCSF interview also gets a JMP one (if you applied)? i know there are only 12 people accepted there. I got one from JMP, but i guess its a whole different process--you got to apply to Berkeley grad school (they sent me an application). anybody know anything? do you have to come up with a thesis before your interview (seems like it).

I think it is a quite selective process. They only interview 50-60 students. They select their interviewees from the UCSF interview pool, but not all students in this pool who are interested in the JMP are offered an interview.
I interviewed there in early November, and I'm pretty sure they don't expect you to know exactly what your thesis will be on. Of the students I met there, very few knew coming in what their thesis would be. However, I'd definitely suggest having some general ideas to throw out there, because they will ask you if you've thought about it during your interview.
It's a very cool program, and of all the places I've interviewed I think the students there were by far the brightest.

50-60 for 12 spots. 🙁 I wonder if the odds are worse than SF admissions overall.

Well, considering UCSF takes about half the people they interview for regular MD I'd say the odds for JMP are definitely worse.

While I agree that the Berkeley program is probably more competitive to get into than is UCSF, I think that they do accept more than 12 people.
Their class size is 12, which probably means that they accept somewhere between 20-25 applicants (just a guess).
