So a lot of upperclassmen at my school have been recommending the Kaplan Med Essentials book instead of first aid... I was wondering if somebody who has used both could compare and contrast them? I.e. is one book better for certain subjects vs. others? I am aiming for a very competative specialty so I am trying to get as good of a handle on things as possible. Thanks!

No, it's not better than FA.

I'll agree here - it's not better than FA overall.

The people who seem to love Kaplan's stuff are usually those who don't have a firm footing in the material and need a lot of help. If you fall into this category, Kaplan's stuff will help build you from the ground up to some extent, but their stuff is by no means the best out there.
