Is Kaplan's Organic Edge enough for DAT ?

I have a question regarding the O.Chem section on DAT. I just finished O.Chem-I this fall (2004) but for personal reasons, I won't be able to take O.Chem-II until next fall but I have to take DAT this May (2005). I did very well on O.Chem-I. My question is that Do I need to study all the material for O.Chem-II from my book (Francis Carey) or Will Kaplan's Organic Edge good enough. I have read on several posts that O.Chem section on DAT is focused more on OChem-I. I have started reading the Organic Edge and seems like its pretty simple. If thats all the material I need to cover for DAT, I feel comfortable. Could someone please provide me with some input.

I used the ochem edge and its a pretty accurate picture of what you will see on the ochem section of the dat 🙂.

I thought a majoroty of the exam was Org II.. I didn't use the 'Edge' but used the Kaplan blue book, which was just fine for the Org section. I thought Org was the easiest of all the DAT sections. Maybe you should use the 'edge' and the Kaplan DAT book.

Yeah i agree it is the easiest section. The organic edge has exactly what the kaplan blue book does in it, plus questions at the end of each chapter, and a little more detail in certain areas.

Thanks DrTacoElf for the information. I am assuming from your reply that I don't need to really go through the whole text book for O.Chem-II. This is a great relief. I think Organic Edge does a good job of explaining the material but when I compare it with my text book, organic edge doesn't have the details and all the reaction stuff which my text book has. Therefore, I was kind of confused about the level of detail needed for DAT. Please confirm on this.

BTW, I am also in Atlanta and would be applying for 2010 class at MCG. Lets see how it goes. Just wondering, how was your interview experience at MCG and do you know any stats (GPA, DAT etc) for your 2009 class ?

For the DAT its not really necessary to understand reaction mechnisms in detail except for SN1, SN2, E1, E2 and carbonyl chemistry. Beyond that an advanced understanding surely doesn't hurt but its not obligatory to score well. MCG is two 1 on 1 interviews, mine were pretty laid back and not tricky by anymeans. I'm not sure about the class of 2009 stats yet, I don't think its even been totally selected yet.

I "borrowed" the book at Border's to prepare a couple of days prior to my exam and believe me, that book is the reason I scored the best on Orgo. It's to your advantage to prepare using it.
