Hello everyone,
I'm curious to know how accurate (if at all) the LizzyM score is in predicting acceptance to DO school? (GPA*10 + MCAT - 1) The reason is, I need a good method of calculating whether or not I my scores would be competitive with certain schools. That way, I don't blindly apply to schools out of my range. Also, LizzyM score is considered competitive for DO school in general?

Thank you,
Mick

I think that it may be useful as a guide, and it may be a better predictor depending on how balanced you stats are.

For example, a cGPA of 3.1 and a 35 MCAT will give you a LizzyM score of 65. However, a 3.6 cGPA and 30 MCAT will also give you a LizzyM score of 65. Clearly, the applicant with the latter set of stats will be much more competitive than the former.

Also, the LizzyM calculations do not take your science GPA into account, nor does it consider upward grade trends, URM status, and other components of your application that are unable to be quantified.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the LizzyM score.

It's harder to do this with DO schools because they look at more then just numbers, but I'll try.

Very Competitive- 60-65
Competitive- 55-60
Anything below I'd apply broadly if you have good ec's or try to improve those scores.

However, again alot more circumstances determine admission besides these. So I don't know how much I'd put into the LizzyM score.

I agree DO schools, in my opinion, don't evaluate applicants the same way as MD schools. Researching the schools and contacting the admissions departments of schools you are interested in is a far better way of figuring out if your competitive enough for those schools, IMHPMO. 🙂

I had schools that interviewed folks with FAR lower scores than mine flat out reject me prior to interview.

The LizzyM score is meant to help you select allopathic schools where you are most likely to be offered an interview. It is not meant to predict whether you'll be admitted... that goes by far more than the number.

Just setting the record straight.

I think the whole process is too random and based on entirely too many factors for such an equation to have any real predictive value. Instead I'd look at each school's previous acceptance data and apply to those whose average scores are at or around yours.

That's the point of the LizzyM score -- to combine MCAT and gpa in such a way that both can be used to compare to "average scores" for previously accepted applicants to that school. It will help target applications with the hope of getting invitations to interview.

I wouldn't go by this at all. If you take my stats back in the day as a guide:

3.95 GPA, 22 MCAT places me into the "very competitive" category. I think I had six interviews and five acceptances but I think, if I remember correctly, I might have applied to twice as many schools as I got interviews at.

Exactly. It depends on how balanced your stats are.

DO admissions is not as number centric as MD admissions. I have known people with low 20 MCATs who have gotten accepted while those with 30+ were turned away. DO schools seem to look much more on you as a person than research oriented MD schools.

was wondering a 24 on the mcat w/ 6 verbal and 3.42gpa 3.1 sci make me competitive for D.O schools?

I think you have a chance, but you won't know unless you actually apply.
