Is my optometry school dreams unrealistic?

Hi everyone,
I am in desperate need of some good advice. I have graduated from a pretty good school. I recieved my BS in biology however my gpa was only 2.8. I need to take a couple more classes to get all the pre reqs. The only school in the area is a community college. I think I'll bring my gpa up to a 3.0 after these classes. So why didn't I take these classes while I was still at my university? I thought I wanted to do something else and now working in that field I've decided it is definitely not what I want. I know the OAT is an important factor but I have not taken it yet. I will have a LOR from a optometrist and maybe that will help? Does anyone have any ideas of what else I could do? I have my heart set on NECO

Hate to burst your bubble, but NECO is probably out of your reach, even if you nail the OAT. I applied early, have a 3.1 and a 340 OAT and it's been 3 months and i have yet to hear back from them. Haven't been rejected, but I've been accepted to my top 2 schools so I'm not too worried about it. You might be better off applying to some lower caliber schools (and working on your grammar) if you even want to have a shot.

I think you do, but you would need to score well on the OAT. It's not a difficult test, buy you do need to study for it.

Will they accept pre-requisites completed at a community college? My idea of a college may be different from yours since Canadian colleges are considered to be on the same level as trade schools.

Regardless, don't be discouraged. If you don't get in this cycle, you can try again next cycle. You can use that extra time to re-take some classes, build up your resume, and/or re-write the OAT. Decide for yourself if this is really what you want to do because most schools want to know how badly you want it and why and what your long-term professional goals are.

If you look at different schools' stats, they might list the high and low GPA. Berkeley has the highest overall average GPA, but their stats show that the range goes all the way down to a 2.77 or something. So my guess is that that person knocked the OAT out of the park and that's what you should do as well! Have you called NECO's admissions department? You might talk to them about your situation and what it will take for them to seriously consider you. For example, they might tell you to retake some of those classes that took your GPA down. I wouldn't say it's unrealistic, but it'll be a challenge. So is optometry school though, so go for it 🙂

Not necessarily. I've seen practicing optometrists with equally poor grammar.
