Hello, so I am completing an SMP at UNTHSC to enhance my medical school application for the upcoming cycle however, I didn’t do as well as I hoped but I didn’t do bad. My goal was a 3.8 but I’m ultimately on route to get a 3.6. I was wondering would this be bad GPA to apply with. I haven’t taken my MCAT yet (currently hovering around 507 but plan on boosting as soon as I get time to dedicate time to it once I graduate.) also so if anyone has any advice about what I need to aim for at the minimum (obviously ill aim as high as I can but a score that with this gpa doesn’t make me seem high risk academically to an admissions board). My undergrad GPA was terrible which is why I did the SMP. cGPA: 3.06, sGPA: 2.87. I want to go to a Texas medical school and I am in state. I have plenty of clinical experience, volunteer, and hobbies, but lack research and have minimal leadership. Any advice helps! Thank you!

What do your advisors say? How supportive do you feel they would be about your application? Do you have any geographical mission desirability (like UT Tyler because you grew up in East Texas)? In the end, your SMP director's LOR can potentially influence the adcoms within Texas so your standing with them should be fairly clear.

I will be meeting with them soon, but they have assured me numerous times that anything above 3.5 is fine for medical school in Texas, given about a 508ish MCAT I am just a little weary of that advice. but I guess they have been doing this for some time so I should probably just trust it.
