I'm in the process of searching for MD schools to apply to, and was looking at COAs and grading systems as some factors in my selection process

Do you think schools that are P/F no internal ranking are worth paying an extra $20K/year over other schools that are A-F or HP/P/etc with internal rankings?

I prefer the P/F schools in general, but if given the choice between two similarly US ranked MD schools, is the extra $20K/year worth it for the grading system without internal ranks?

what schools are you considering?

No, your grades in the first two years have little impact for your competitiveness in residency match. Not worth $80,000

I think you should make the decision based on which school you like more rather than basing this one one particular factor.

Also after re-reading your OP, you haven't even applied to schools yet ... a lot of these expensive schools give a lot of aid money, so I would apply to places you generally like and then pick from your acceptances (if you get more than one) based on everything that's important to you. Limiting prior to the application process based on sticker price that may not even be what you pay is not a good idea and will hurt the result of your application cycle.

Various mid and low tiers, but this question was referring to one of my state schools (internal ranked, A-F) and OOS's with P/F..

OP you haven't even applied yet. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to figure it out later on.

I was considering this now because I'm not sure to actively look for P/F schools and keep a decent amount of them on my list (all OOS, most have higher COA) or look more towards those I like in my state and surrounding states, at the expense of grading.

From my understandings and reading other posts, the environment of the P/F no ranks looks to foster teamwork and cooperation whereas the A-F and traditional grading schools include much competition during (pre-clinical years). I want to spend my preclinical years in medical school learning and focusing largely on competing against each other. Is this perception accurate? And not worth the 20K/yr extra?

Regardless of whether it's worth the 20k/year to you, it's a decision you should make once you have been accepted and can consider all the factors involved rather than this one single thing.

Nope.

You could eat chipotle with a burrito, chips, and drink like 5 times a day every day of the year with that. That's how I calculated all my finances in med school: chipotle scale.
