It's not too late to do an away rotation, as long as you are not trying to get a letter of recommendation from that rotation. Generally, you want to try and get the letters of recommendation in before 11/01/xxxx; that way your file is complete when the Dean's letter comes out (..IMHO..).

Agree. I am doing an audition rotation right now, and it's great...it's like a month-long interview. The one thing I would caution against is doing one in the middle of interview season (i.e., december) because it will get a little awkward to keep leaving for interviews.

I agree as well. July and August are perfect for away electives where you can get LOR's. If I had to do it over again I would save November for Step II CK and CS and interviews. You will need time off to study for those.

Hi guys,
Our schedule switches every 4 weeks so the dates of rotations sometimes end mid-month. My question is if october 20th is too late to finish up a rotation (at home EM) and still get a letter of rec. in by nov. 1. Is that pushing the person i ask too much? I would ask maybe the week before i finish giving them 3 weeks to write and submit letter. I'll be at "home" meaning they should know me (i will have spent an earlier month doing a wilderness elective) if that makes any difference.
thanks,

It depends on whether you want the rotation to count when they are deciding whom to interview or when they are determining their rank list. I knew someone who did an away rotation starting in mid-November, and got rejected from that program on the first day of the rotation...clearly they had already evaluated his application before he even showed up, so it was essentially a "waste" of a month.
