The title says it all...

If I'm doing an away to get a LOR, would a rotation ending in October be way too late? I should be setting with one by the time applications are being turned in around August, but what would I do if the only way I could get any extra was a late rotation? Can I just submit and then send the letter in as an addendum or something?

Big difference between early October and late October, but either way its getting to be pretty late to add on a LOR to your application. It wouldn't be too late for your potential LOR writer to instead make some phone calls to his/her contacts for you though.

I don't have it yet. I was late to the game deciding on ophtho and am trying to get a second away set up. Most places are telling me they're full till October so I wanted to see if doing one then would even be helpful before I applied for them that late.

Your best option might be to submit your application in August with one ophtho letter and two non-ophtho letters (assuming you can get at least one ophtho letter by that time). Then you can send the October letter to the PC at individual programs later on. I sent a fourth letter when I was applying and every program to which I submitted it was receptive.

Thats a good idea. I've already got two non ophtho letters being written as we speak so I could definitely do that. Thanks for the idea!
