Is OMFS worth pursuing with a bottom of the barrel class rank?

I'm currently a year out of school; finished in the bottom 10-20% of my class. Did a hospital AEGD last year and working PP now. I don't really have any excuses, just that I wasn't very good at general dentistry in school. I haven't taken the CBSE yet but I'm sure I could get a decent score if I studied for the next year or so. I understand I would also require at least one or a couple of intern years before applying. My question is if all that goes well (CBSE, internship, etc.), would my class rank pretty much disqualify me from a position regardless? Is it even worth trying?

youll never know if you dont try. i think youd need an amazing CBSE score to make up for it though

It’ll be a long road ahead to match. Might be 3-4 years best case scenario if you match at all.

Only you can say if it is worth it to you. You will give your prime earning years as a GP in pursuit of this.

Do some soul searching and see if it’s what you and your family really want for your future.

CBSE is a beast. Just studying a few hours a day for a year doesnt mean youre going to do well. What it took for me was studying 12-16 hours a day for 6 months. If youre willing to put in that work, then I think you have a great shot at doing well and matching after an intern year.

I’m in a good work situation where I only have to work 3 days a week. That leaves 4 days of full time studying. I think a year of that would be enough to do well and I’m a pretty good test taker.

Only thing holding me back from trying is if my class rank makes all the other efforts pointless.

Since you have so much free time, I would commit yourself to 5 Externships for a week/5 days. Explain to the program directors your situation. Take the CBSE and kill it. May have to do an intern year or two, but it might be doable if it’s what you really want.

you're talking about a not for sure thing and you're looking at 4-6 more years of schooling (if you get in soon) and add about half a million to a million more in debt. is it really worth it for you since you're going to have to battle for it? I originally wanted OS, but realized that what i am currently doing (own two practices and have associates working for me), sounds better than to be standing all day pulling teeth and putting implants in. Everyone has different reasons for being in the career they are in, but I just don't see that many positive reasons for you to kill yourself to become an OS. Use what you have and become successful with it.

I’d say it depends on your loan situation. Probably not worth it if it’s going to cause your loans to balloon. If you’re debt free or close to it then I’d say go for it.
