I was going to save the entire summer for Orgo II, now I hear its easier than Orgo I, would it be a bad idea to through in Calc I in the summer too?

Think of II as reactions and mechanisms. (That's all you really do.) It's all irrelevant, because what you hear and what actually "is" are two completely different things.

By this time, you should know what you can and can't handle. Register for the classes in which you know you can handle.

No, it is not easier. The material in Organic II is more difficult. If you study hard and set your mind to it, you may do better in II than you did in I.

I would say it was definitely harder material wise than Ochem 1, but at that point, I have already developed a system and study practices that worked for me so I aced right through it.

Well I wouldn't say II is easier than I, but it wasn't as hard. My ochem I teacher laid a lot of foundation for ochem II and maybe that was why it seemed like more work. I had a B in Ochem I and an A in Ochem II. But i guess it would be safe to say it depends on the teacher and how well they teach and how well you can study.

Well you're going to give us an outline of this system right?

Very simple, I studied 6 hours a day everyday for that class no matter what. By the time, the class finished, I got hired to be Ochem TA right away.

6 hours a day? Do you think I should stick to my schedule : Organic II, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbio?
It would benefit me tremendously if I could to ace these classes next semester, but I don't know if I have the time to study for them properly (considering that I work 16 hrs a week).

I think you should stick to your schedule, it is definitely doable, although you'll have one busy semester.

You don't have to study 6 hrs a day :luck: , I only have, because I never went to lecture and because I was overly paranoid, due to being surrounded by lazy friends who failed that class numerously and tried to scare me into thinking that class was actually harder than it really was. :luck:

I'm just afraid of going sleep deprived throughout the whole semester, because it may very well happen. My question is, how do you stay relentlessly motivated day in and day out (It seems to be a slight problem for me)?

I know this question was directed at cheburashka, but I'll just say that to motivate myself, I picture myself in the career I want to accomplish. I picture how happy my family would be, how proud I would be of myself, and I also picture the financial stability I'll have with my career. Just my .02

Jackal head, take orgo 2 in the summer! maguire teaches then and hes awesome!

i took orgo 2 + lab and calc together this past summer and it was fine

I realize that the better I do, the closer I will be to my dream. I know how proud my family will be when I am done, and even how proud they will be when I get accepted!

When you see your dreams dying, the motivation will come.

In order to see your dreams die, you must have a specific mentality, one based on humility. Most importantly, you cannot become complacent with your accomplishments (or so called).

How I can sustain this mentality is beyond me, but not beyond the 4.0 student.

Now THAT is deep. Hope you used something like that in your PS. lol

Org. Chem II is probably the most difficult course i've ever taken in my life. I'm in my 1st year of Pharm. school right now and nothing compares to Org. Chem II. It's so much junk that you have to memorize and for no reason at all. You don't use anything from Org. Chem II later on in pharm. school. As the matter of fact, Org. Chem I is a lot more important in preparing u for pharm school.

so far we're doing mass spec, NMR and such and later on we're doing all the more advanced functional groups. Its harder for a fact but I don't think it is by much if you have a solid foundation on Ochem1. I really liked Ochem 1 and its a really fun class. Actually i like ochem period lol but like others said i don't think a lot of ochem2 is applicable to pharm school.

Organic II is much more difficult than Organic I, it's like every section you went through in I is doubled in II. Like other people said though, if you have good study skills and a strong foundation from I, you'll be fine in II.

Is organic II easier than organic I?

Depends on when you take it. Taking organic II during Fall or Spring (from what I've heard) is MUCH more difficult than organic chemistry I. There is much more information to memorize and mentally organize.

I took organic II during a summer semester and I found it easier than organic I. This is because the teachers make it straight forward ( test questions didn't make you "think outside the box") and skipped many of the chapter concepts (due to the reduced amount of time during the summer semester). Even funnier, people I know who took it in a summer B semester found it even easier. Most made A's from just memorizing class notes and not really learned concepts at all.

Bottom line is that Organic II uses all the information from organic I. Nearly ALL reactions learned in organic I are required steps for the synthesis's and concepts learned in organic II. The better you understand organic I the easier organic chemistry II will be.

If you can learn and remember a load of reactions and a handful of mechanisms, you should be fine.

Don't underestimate this class because of the first few chapters.
