Hey, I was wondering if it was through the regular match. My friend who is going for optho told me that she thought she saw it as part of the early SF Match. She wasn't sure though. Is ENT half early match and half regular match? Thanks guys.

I've been doing some looking and it appears that ENT is through ERAS.

It used to be part of the SF Match. It has been part of ERAS for several years now, though.

Thanks for th info.

Another question about otolaryngology...
As a 3rd year, should I be using my single elective to do a graded oto/ophtho month. My friend who is interested in optho said she was going to do a full optho month for her 3rd year elective but it is ungraded so she opted for this oto/optho thing that is graded. I am assuming if my school has a 3rd year oto month, it is along the same lines, ungraded... So is it a good idea to do the oto/optho graded month?

As of now, I scheduled to have radiology for my elective month, but I can still switch out. I am somewhat interested in rads, and think it is a good rotation to learn from. Also this could help me rule out/in rads for me. But it seems important to get some more ENT clerkship grade experience. Currently all I have is a little bit of experience in peds ENT clinic that is part of my pediatrics rotation.

I'm pretty sure our 1 month ENT elective is graded

Can just speak from my experience.

If you're trying to rule-in/rule-out oto as what you want to pursue for residency, by all means do the rotation. The earlier you can commit yourself definitely towards matching, the better.

If you feel like you should do the rotation because you're worried about learning ENT before your sub-i, don't worry so much. My experience on both my sub-i and away sub-i were that residents and faculty know you don't get much if any otolaryngology during the first three years of med school. I didn't get any "I can't believe you don't know that" vibe from any residents or attendings. Showing a willingness to read goes a long way on your sub-i, you don't have to come in having hammered down the basic concepts like a gen surg sub-i may expect of you.

If you're sold on the field, any exposure to faculty in the department is beneficial. I used my third year elective as an "otolaryngology research block" and got a leg up on a couple studies, and also had to opportunity to get in clinic and the OR a bit. I thought it was a good choice.

That being said, it's easy to overthink all of this. What you choose for your third year elective is not going to make or break you either way.

Are you going to do it this year?

It seems like you are all in on ENT.

I am like 80% set on ENT, still sort of have my mind open on a few other things. Just want to make sure that there is nothing else out there that I find as interesting. I have rads in January, and people have brainwashed me by telling me that I "look like a radiologist," whatever that means. I just think I should give it a shot... I don't know, it seems like it would be more beneificial to do the ENT elective since it is a super competitive field. But then I would never get that exposure to radiology.

@ ZagDoc, thanks for the input.
