Hi all,

I have heard that Transitional/Prelim Internal med, Categorical Internal Med and Prelim Surgery are all considered as the one year 'prelim' requirement for most PGY-2 residency (Ophtho). Does anyone know if pediatric prelim or PGY-1 categorical are accepted? Where and who should I direct this question to?

Thanks.

Pediatrics prelim years are fine, there are just not many available and usually need to be specially arranged. I would talk with the Peds residency program director at your school who should be able to help outline your options.

There are a few places that will let you do it, but make sure you also ask the ophtho program you match into about it. I wanted to do a peds prelim year but my program told me they didn't want me to do it, they wanted me to have experience in adult medicine as well. Good luck!
