It is not as bad as endo and ortho, not as easy as prostho.
Lately it has been hard for FT dentists to get accepted in those programs. Competition has increased with crises. A lot of people going back to school.
If you have good scores and experience, give it a try!

As far as salaries go... It really depends.. I heard of GP making just as much money as specialists... Some people say perio has actually been loosing place to GP. lots of GPs have been doing the work themselves. Others say it is the future specialty because of implants getting more accessible..
It is up to you. Don't simply choose it thinking of money tho.

thank you very much. your advice is invaluable to me.

Now, I am Ph.D student in Oral Biology. My research focused on Periodontics. Actually I am very interested in periodontics. I have good publications and have good recommendation letter. However, i have not taken NBDE and just prepared to take it next year. My GPA is just so-so.

btw, I have green card and do you think it is difficult to get loan for my future study?

thanks again.

No, you can easily get federal loan
with this background seems like you would have a very good chance. Especially on Harvard where they like people with experience in research.

So prepare yourself well for NDBE. Also GRE and TOEFL. You have plenty of time since you will only apply next year.
Best program in America is UTHSCSA. UNC is also very good.
Some are very competitive, others a little easier.

Good luck

Keep in mind not all states will allow you to get a license since you are still a FTD. Check ADA website for more info. States such as Texas, Washington and Louisianna, among a few others would allow you to get a license being a FTD and taking a 2 year graduate program.

Hi!
I do not know how competetive the program is but as far as stipend is concerned they usually do no provide that except for few schools like u of Tenesse.
