Is religion your motivation?

Yes, it is quite a common practice for parents to push their children towards what is "best for them", at least in the eyes of said parents.

Even more expected to hear this being done in middle eastern, asian, etc. families.

Btw, lack of paragraphs in the OP often resembles trolling.

very ill informed. the title of the thread should be, "Is your family your motivation." Religion has nothing to do with this issue.

some parents like to brag to other parents and it has nothing to do with the religion. And we can't even blame the person's culture; it has to do with the mentality of the parents. This mentality can be found in parents throught the U.S. as well as the world.

No I am sorry but the title of the thread is spot on. If anything it was my fault for not clarifying it enough. I didn't want the post to be to long. Hamdan quite literally said, IN HIS RELIGION that is the basic way of life. You are to watch out for your family, do better in your life or at least just as good as your parents and/or immediate family. I am not to knowledgeable about this topic, but it is so very interesting I wanted to hear more. But he definitely told me religion was the key factor in why they act like they do and do what they do.

Trolling? If you are talking about me then you should probably re-read the paragraph. I find it quite amusing you concluded that lack of paragraphs resemble trolling...shocking.

If that is what he said (even though I doubt it), then he is misinformed about his own religion.

If that gets you through the day then there is absolutely no problem with it.

Who cares what the motivation is? As long as you work hard and are good at what you do.

HOWEVER, if you're gonna half ass it because you don't have the right motivation then you're probably just wasting your time.

You really have no room or evidence to call me a liar, why would I make something up especially when I am asking for educational purposes only. Yes he did say that and a lot more but a lot of what he said is irrelevant to this particular topic. He literally said it is his religious beliefs that drive his families to think like that, the trickle effect if you will. The big picture (religion) has an affect on something smaller (family morals/values) and so on. Get it?

Yes this is also true I suppose. But also realize that weather it be the RIGHT motivation or not (which is also an opinionated statement), motivation is still motivation as long as there is enough to keep you going 'till the end.

Really, in his religion family is important? That's so weird.

I attend a Community College in my home state, Oklahoma. While in my second semester I met a guy named Hamdan in my Bio. for Majors class, of course he was from Pakistan and he was Muslim, not to mention his dad is a Neurosurgeon. I found it interesting when Hamdan and I were sitting down talking about his home land and blah blah, Hamdan is pursuing a career as a M.D. I asked him what made him choose this path (simply because it is such a difficult and strenuous path to take and I was curious haha.) and basically his only reason for wanting to reach the status of M.D. is because of this reason alone. In Hamdan's religion he said family is everything, but also the family name is a HUGE factor in the way of living where he came from. He mentioned that if his dad were talking to another man about their children it would be an embarrassment if the other guy's son/daughter was a doctor and Hamdan was just some everyday construction worker. Basically he summed it up to be that Pakistani families are very competetive with eachother, especially when it comes to their family name. So his goal is to become a M.D. not because he wants to and enjoys the health care field, but because he is literally forced to become some prestigious person for his family to show off an brag about. Sorry if this was a boring novel to some of you but I find it quite interesting that a person would put themselves through hell just to give his dad bragging rights. Has anyone else heard of something similar?

Ugh, having grown up in a pakistani-indian environment, I can totally relate to this. Especially the part where Pakistani families are very competitive. It's very unfair to the children and not to mention, extemely materialistic. Luckily though, my parents are very "unorthodox" and would most likely be cool with if I told them my passion is to be a construction worker.
-But anyways, religion/family is most certainly not my motivation, but I have seen numerous people who entered/trying to enter the medical field only based on their parent's selfish wishes. Oh, also you have to remember, doctors are given respect in plenty of places in the world. For many people from Pakistan, doctors are viewed almost as Gods, and therefore, when these people come to America they tell their children that they must become doctors no matter what.

Trolling? If you can't contribute to this understanding and come up with a response a little more useful then maybe you need to go to an off topic section to raise your little post count.

Way to try and decipher his quote, but being from Oklahoma and going to a Community College has nothing to do with it. I will be around these forums even after I am accepted into a Medical School, sit back and watch.

Perhaps you will. But hopefully by then your understanding of how to use paragraphs will have improved.

Why would I break this into separate paragraphs? The whole statement is under ONE general idea, not TWO. If you would like me to edit for you to my it a little easier for you to read it then I suppose just asking would have worked as well. But do not come onto my thread and criticize my thread because your eyes can't focus on a "big" paragraph. Especially don't talk **** about where I am from, I promise you Oklahoma has a lot more to offer than what you think. Do research.

I did try and research oklahoma. I ended up throwing up all over my laptop, and I had to buy a new one. Actually, I had to pay for two new laptops, cause while I was at Best Buy I explained why I threw up to the sales associate and vomited again. Some may say Apple's MacBook Pros are high quality, but that didnt stop my projectile vomiting from destroying it.

And it's obvious you do not understand anything about paragraphs. Do research, they have more to offer than what you think.

...But your writing is so haphazard and lacking in any semblance of structure or organization that trying to give it visual structure (e.g., through paragraph breaks) is like trying to separate an American from his food. It's just not going to happen nicely.

Oh wow, If I knew you guys were going to whine SO MUCH about a paragraph I wrote at like 3 a.m. then I would have revised the damn thing for you. I was trying to remember what he said, exactly how he said it. So as I was thinking, I put down exactly what I remembered and how I remembered it. Structure was not my top priority. This isn't a thank-you letter, a LOI, or even an essay to Med School...I figured since this is PRE-MED that you would have enough sense to read it the first time with no trouble. I hope a mod locks this damn thread. On a side note though, I am glad you had the free time to go through and edit my post, that really made me LOL!

Noone is trolling you. You're just terrible at writing, and your threads are even worse.

Let this thread die. PLEASE. All you are doing is arguing about a thread I could care less about how is written. I passed Composition I & II as well as literature writing with all A's. I'm not to concerned with pleasing your taste. Let it die.

I don't think you'll be around here for too long.

His writing skills are very poor, but I don't know why everyone is attacking him. The topic itself could be interesting but the way he presents it comes off as a tad ignorant. Having family and religion as a motivator is nothing radical.

I think OrdinaryMD may just be young or inexperienced as to forum etiquette.
