I'm thinking of doing ortho, but I really don't want to do research. If i just do really well on my boards and I'm in the top of my class, can I still specialize?

The point of research is that it develops "critical" thinking. When you read scientific articles ... you can apply your research skills to evaluate the content of the research paper, article, etc. So, even if you are the top kid in class ... you should reconsider your stance on research.

Most grad programs, if not all, require a thesis, research project to be completed in order to graduate. This includes the certificate programs.

Do you think the same is true for OMFS?

Well, I just look at it like this. Do you want to be the only one in a room full of applicants without any research experience? Could you get in without it? Absolutely! But, if you can do something to help you become a more well rounded applicant, then why not?
