Hello everyone!
I was interested in applying to SCO this summer(as well as others). I know that it is in Memphis but I have always heard that Memphis is not the safest city. I have never been there so I don't know. Does anyone ever feel unsafe at sco or in it's surroundings?

Thanks!!

the campus of sco is safe. there are quite a few security guards on campus that watch over the place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. granted there are certain areas of memphis which are not safe, but i doubt you would journey into those areas anyways.

from what i hear (and granted this is only hear say) ICO, UMSL, and PCO are in bad neighborhoods too. i'm not sure about how safe the actual campus is though. i would imagine they are pretty safe.

While I will admit I am not entirely comfortable with the off-campus area around the school, UMSL's campus is safe. In fact, most crime rates are stable or in a downward trend on-campus. Here is our annual crime report if anyone needs solid numbers. The location certainly did not deter me from attending school here!

Just for clarification, PCO's school is not in a bad area at all. It's in a wealthy suburb. The clinic is in a sketchy area.

my apologies. i must have heard the clinic was. sorry.

as for SCO, we have about 3-4 incidences on campus each year, but nothing serious. memphis can be a dangerous city, but not any of the places you would go to, lol. the downtown area is nice and has quite a bit of cops around, especially on the weekends. there's also a citizen watch brigade called the Blue Suede Brigade that stands on street corners with direct contact to the police. Memphis has a nice downtown, and its where a lot of the city's $$$ comes from. They protect it.

The parts of town you'll be in are fine.
