Is Scrubs realistic of life during intern year/residency?

Right now I haven't gotten much shadowing under my belt, BUT I have watched Scrubs Season 1 to 8 thrice over. Do I have a realistic picture of what life is like as an intern/resident??

In Scrubs, Dr. Cox is the malignant attending who is generally nasty and crude to everyone around him, but deep down has a soft human side.

In real life, attendings don't have human sides.

Yes, medical dramas are exactly like the real thing. I hear they even play dramatic music during traumas while the docs are working like on Grey's or ER

Sarcasm aside, medical dramas are less concerned with the reality of medical practice and more with entertainment. If you really want to know what life like an intern is like, turn off Scrubs and find a doc to shadow!
 
I suppose lots of time was spent in VLSB but to name your SDN handle after it is hilarious.

Also, what other TV shows are representative of a MD's life? House seems to be all about the lupus and vicodine.

Yeah, at my hospital we deal with mass casualties each week like in ER, have frequent sex in the call rooms like in Grey's, and the IM docs always do their own labs/path/rads/surgery like in House. All the while we get mercilessly taunted by the janitorial staff. TV is right on the mark. No point in shadowing. :laugh:

Truth of the matter is that scrubs touches on some of the ethical issues in medicine. But that is where the reality ends. The first season of ER was pretty good in capturing some aspects of medical life. After that it jumped the shark, in that respect. St Elsewhere (available on Hulu) is pretty good in terms of residency life.

I found Scrubs to be more realistic than the medical "dramas".

Of course that doesn't mean it's realistic in itself. It is a comedy show after all. But if I had to pick one that was most realistic, Scrubs would actually win over stuff like Grey's, House or ER (except maybe season 1).

No, it contains innumerable kernels of truth, but it's not exactly a documentary, and you shouldn't use it as a framework to conceptualize residency. That said, when you are a resident you will occasionally encounter situations that remind you of Scrubs. In those moments you will see the flashes of reality that underpin the show.

I am by no means an avid Scrubs watcher (mainly lazy weekends afternoons on Comedy Central), but the best example I can think of offhand would be Dr. Townsend from My Brother, My Keeper (Season 2, Episode 14). You will meet quite a few Dr. Townsends as you go along.

Which part of Dr. Townsends?? The good natured, happy go lucky attending or the old and terribly outdated in technique attending or both?
 
why must human beings believe that TV is even somewhat representative of real life...............

Scrubs is probably about as realistic a representative of residency as High School Musical was of high school. The amount of time spent singing and dancing is greatly exaggerated.
 
Surprisingly, I thought the surgeons I've been shadowing in the OR sounded an awful lot like the Turk and some of the other surgeons. It actually scared me a little.

Also every once in a while when shadowing internal medicine I had experiences right out of Scrubs. Nice to know that the parts of Scrubs that I felt were the most educational really were very useful.

Given that I settled on medicine somewhere in between biochemistry and physiology lectures, guest physician talks in Premed 101 and an orientation for an incredible surgery internship, all of which happened to be in VLSB, I find it oddly appropriate 😉

VLSB FTW! One of my favorite buildings on campus, complete with dinosaus

From what I hear scrubs has some bits of truth and is more realistic than Greys or House. I certainly wouldn't want to go to med school if residency was at all like Grey's That level or drama is entretaining on TV but you wouldn't want it in real life.

Older folks who can't or won't stay current. Staying up to date is very difficult, and becomes more so every year, but you will encounter some outliers who are easily 15+ years behind.

Yea Scrubs and House are exactly like real medical practice.

The Office is exactly how a real office works.

Friends is exactly how real life is.

Battlestar Galactica is exactly how real the future will be.

Didn't you know? TV shows are based off reality. All the time.
