I would need to see the question to tell you for sure. The two terms are not synonymous, although there is some overlap between them. MCAT questions are usually about picking the best answer out of a few that could be right. Your definition of distal stimulus is a little off; distal stimuli are the actual objects and events in the environment. Your definition is for proximal stimuli.

I also have a similar question.
On the AAMC section bank, there was a multiple question that included sensory stimulus and proximal stimulus as choices. (Answer was Proximal Stimulus)
Is proximal stimulus a term for a more specific visual sensory stimulus?

Thank you

Distal stimulus is the actual physical stimulus in the environment that our body senses. For example - the actual colors and words that I see on my laptop screen
Proximal stimulus is the stimulus when it has entered our body. For example - the image of the laptop screen as it appears on my retina
