I desperately want to get into SUNY for Fall 2009. What do people think? Here are my stats:

Undergrad BSc GPA 3.47
Pre-req GPA 3.30 (I got a C+ in Calculus 🙁 ...but an A+ in Physics)
I am missing organic chemistry and I am taking it this fall.
I did my Masters of Science (research based) in anatomy and neuroscience graduating this year GPA 3.7

I shadowed 4 optometrists at 4 different clinics for about a day at each.
I have other volunteer work like helping coaching a competitive soccer team for 12 year old girls, school societies, student council, University administration.

I am currently studying for the OAT and will be taking them in Sept or Oct (depends how much organic I can teach myself).

Any thoughts appreciated!

I would ask SUNY directly but if you do well on the OAT, then there is no reason that your application wouldn't be reasonably competitive at most if not all schools of optometry.

I agree...your stats look great for getting accepted into optometry school. But, a word of advice, don't rush to take the OAT! Take your time and study hard for it. The last thing you want to do is ruin your chances of getting in by low OAT scores when everything else on your application looks great. I submitted my application early at PCO (as soon as they started accepting them) without the OAT score and then was granted acceptance pending receipt of the OAT scores. Then I submitted my OAT scores and got accepted soon after. It is imperative to submit your application early...many people don't realize this. Good luck!

i thought you had to send your OAT scores for them to even consider your application? i'm rushing to cram as much as i can in to take the OAT so i can apply early... i still have a few pre reqs that i need to take, but i'll take them in the upcoming semesters before i would enter. so if i just send my application and my letters of recommendation, those are enough? did you have to interview as well? and how much later did you take the OATs?

got your message, check my PM when you get the chance.

Your application (not counting the OAT) will be way stronger than mine was and I'm going to SUNY. Just do well on the OAT. No need for a worried face next to a C+.

what was your rational for doing a masters degree? just curious because they are time consuming, expensive and don't train you to do anything

just do well on the OAT, and make sure that your shadowing exp gives you enough to say during the interview.
