I was jsut curious to know, is Temple anyone number oen choice for dental school? It is for me. Just liek to chta with some people, possible future class mates

it used to be pretty high on my list b/c of the clinical rep. However after speaking to some dental students at interviews it seems that they may be overstating this claim. I will be able to give a better opinion after my interview. I like the philly area...

I drove by temple once, lets just say I'll never ever do that again...not even in an armored car!

If I ever have to go near temple again, I am bringing a gun and that is not a joke.

THis guy is obviously joking. I interviewed at Temple, and the campus is perfectly safe. I don't understand why people in this forum keep giving Temple's location a bad rap.

Are you joking bec I wasn't.

Maybe in the morning its safe when all the crackheads are sleeping. Have you ever been around there in early evening/night?

I feel bad for the students that have to stay there late.

That's good. lol. Very clever. Fortunately that's not true. I don't know about you, but I tend to steer clear of crack-houses and btw I didn't see any near the dental school.

temple is my backup school 😴

those a--holes rejected me.

i wish this was a middle finger ---> 👍

BUT CONGRATS TO EVERYONE ELSE!

Totally agree with you. I recently had my interview there. I made a stupid decision to walk from the main campus to the dental school in late afternoon. I'm just so glad that I'm still alive. For anyone never walk around the streets, you guys may not have an idea how bad that area really is. I wouldn't go there ever again.

If I can choose the schools again, I would choose either Temple or Nova. When you get into the clinic, you are going to realize that how helpful it would be if the school can provide you lots of patients. For some schools, basically, everything is on your own. Many seniors are struggling for finding patients to graduate and "to take the state board".

Most of the people think about ortho/endo/oral surgery at the beginning of their dental school year, and based on that, they consider the reputation and average score of NBDE1. However, every school has students who are accepted to the above specialities. With it said, there is no such thing that NYU graduate will be looked down when they apply the speciality. YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR OWN STUDY. However, you can't control what types of patients and how many patients you will have.

Please ask the Jounior/senior of the school you are interested before you pay the deposit.

I agree the neighborhood there is a little bit on the scary side, but isn't that at nearly every dental school? And while the area is bad, it gives you an almost endless pool of patients to work on.

As long as you don't go off the medical school campus and take the subway around, it's really not that bad at all.

All the people I talked to there said that they never had any problems and didn't know of anyone who did. It's really just another point where you need to be aware of your surrounding and take appropriate measures to be safe (mace, RAD classes, etc.). This would be the same precautions no matter what school you went to.

That's just my 2 cents...

Are you serious????? How bad is it exactly?! I'm planning on driving down there the day before the interview....

Scared for your life? Did you just get weened? Play it smart! Don't suck your thumb while you walk down the street, you'll be fine. I've lived in detroit and was lost in south chicago once, just be cool and you won't get thumped on.

:scared:
😎

still my number one. Dec 1st can't come soon enough can it?

hey guys....about the area, I dont understand why its such a suprise for anyone!! Arent all urban areas the same?? What makes Temple's area worse than other urban-based schools like Tufts, Detroit, or Columbia? Just because Columbia is an Ivy LEague school, people look past the fact that its located in Washington Heights??? Geez 🙄

Fact is fact....if you goto an urban school, you're gonna have to confront the realities of urban life. If this is a problem for you, goto UConn or Stony Brook.

I had my interview on Oct 25th at Temple!! It was GREAT!! The school is perfectly safe. I love Temple!!! and for everything that it has to offer. It was and still is my number one choice. The interview was great as well. PPl there are soo nice - Brian, Terry, Dr. Campbell, and all other students that I talked to, even the other interviewees as well.

And yes i'm saying the same thing as Corolla "Dec 1st can't come soon enough can it!!!!!!!!!"

😍

I like Brian too. The area isn't as bad as I thought. 😉

I'm not sure about Temple yet, I think it'll all depend on how my interview goes. The school sounds great, lots of clinical experience, which it is just what I'm looking for, and my wife and I would love the experience of living back east, especially in such historically significant city. My wife is really excited about being close to New York City, she's crazy into musicals! I'm more excited about finally being in a city that'll have some art museums. I've heard a lot of bad things about the area where the school is. I mean everyone I've talked to has said that it's really bad. But a lot of these people are from Idaho and have never seen a big city before. My home town is right by Sacramento, and lived for two years in of Mexico City, 6 months of that time I lived in an area called Nezahualcoyotl, ask anyone from the D.F. and they can tell you how bad it is there. Any way I just can't imagine it being all that bad. So really for me it will come down to the interview and if my wife and I think it's the right place for our family.
Oh but just to counter all those bad things I've heard about the area I was just talking to a girl yesterday from philly and she said she's taken the subway down to that area before and didn't feel like she was in danger.

Temple is not that bad. I was told as long as I leave dental school by 4:30-5 pm I should be fine. I love Temple. I especially like Temple students.

When you visit the school, make sure you visit the suburbs near the school where most of the students live (about a 10-15 mins drive to school). THe Philly suburbs are very very nice and very very reasonably priced....when I went on my Temple interview, I didnt get a chance to see anything outside the school so housing was a concern for me....but when I returned to Temple when I was making my final decison, i went to check out the suburbs and fell in love with them. Its really a GREAT place to raise a family.

Also, be sure to talk to many married people in my class cause there are MANY of them...and they will be able to tell you more about raising a family and gonig to Temple.

Even if you are here after 5pm, its no big deal. Trust me, its all hype. The school is lit up like a football stadium at night and there is tons of traffic on the streets all the time (Broad St. is the major street in Philly).

Just like everywhere, big city rules apply. Would you walk down a dark alleyway in New York, Boston or LA?

That's really interesting to know about the suburbs. Why, in your opinion, is it great to raise a family there? Good schools for kids? Nice neighborhoods with plenty of parks and stuff? Lots of cultural stuff to take the wife to? Not that I'll have tons of free time. Affordable housing is always a big plus. Esecially being that close to the school.

We only have one car and I was kinda hoping to ride the bus or subway to school if I get accepted, is that possible dirrectly from the suburbs or do you think my wife would have to drop me off at the bus stop or subway everyday?

I kinda figured all the saftey issues with the school were all hype. As I've been checking out maps of the area I could see that broad st. looks like a major street. I don't think I'll have time to really go check out the surrounding areas, but if there are some places I can get to by subway please give me the stop, I'll be using the broad line to get from the hotel to the school but I'm sure I can figure out how to get to any stop on another line if I need to. I already printed off the subway line maps.

I've been to visit Temple, a friend of mine just started Dental school there this semester. Where he lives just outside the city is suburban and I'm sure its perfectly safe. We went down to the school and made sure to drive THROUGH the bad areas and its not bad at all. I guess I'm used to it as I live in Atlanta, but from what I learned in my time if you keep to yourself and don't go around asking for trouble you'll be fine. I've lived in some bad areas in Atlanta (people shot outside my apt on the street, girls getting raped, etc) but I still feel safe.
