I've been looking into both allo- and osteo- programs at some different schools. Both interest me, and where I go will largely depend on which schools accept me. After practicing for a long while, I want to move more into research and become a professor at a University Hospital.

However, I recently heard that DOs cannot be promoted as high in University Hospitals as MDs.

Has anyone else heard this? How high up can DOs be promoted?

DO's can only make it as high as cafeteria supervisor...or maybe the guy/girl who cleans the floor in the lab.

I knew a doctor who was named Dr. Jan-itor D.O. he invented the knife-wrench! seriously why are there people starting these threads????

When MDs and DOs are working together at the same hospitals, I heard that the MDs always gang up on the DOs and give them wedgies. Is this true?

I've heard the same thing from my shadowing experiences. Sometimes MD's also write mean notes to DO's telling them that they don't want to be friends.

To go along with this I've also witnessed DO's passing notes to MDs that say:

Do you like me? Check one Yes No

I heard it was an atomic wedgie! they even pull your labcoat over your head

Their was a DO as surgeon general in the army (Lt. Gen) so I guess we won't get a President 🙁 😛

DO's can hold any position (and DO HOLD EXECUTIVE POSITIONS) that an MD can hold. The sooner people, realize this the better for the profession.

Sure I've heard it. I also know that people often comment from their own very limited experiences.

America is still very much based on meritocracy. If you as a DO produce excellent research, you will find a professional home.

I think you should check the DO practice rights ... last time I checked, DOs would work IN the cafeteria, but cannot actually become supervisors.

(KNIFEE WRENCHHHHHH ..... For kids!!)👍

You need to check your sources because at some kitchens they cant get privileges to use the stove, but may attend the drink dispenser. This is more common in larger fancy resturantes . However in rural small town joints like "smitty's porkloin" they can operate the fryer.

I'm hoping to match into a drink dispensing residency myself!! This is good news.

I hear that is a great field. Afterwards, do you plan on taking a fellowship in Pepsi, Coke, or Dr. Pepper?

Ha ... pepsi would be great, but it's really hard for a DO to match into a pepsi cola felowship. I'll shoot for a Coke one, and we will see what happens.

You better try for less prestigious positions. Best bet would be Grape, creamsoda, and strawberry fellowships. If you are really competivite maybe

I agree with my colleagues. Work toward being the best physician / scientist you can be. 👍

Most DO's are taller than MD's so if you think of it that way the ceiling is lower. Also, DO girls are hotter.

I went in for a checkup today. The guy who did my examination was a DO, so after we were done, I hired him to clean my apartment

What did he do, manipulate the carpet until it was clean? Maybe he got more emotionally connected with the windows and therefore motivated them to be streak-free? I bet when you got home he had robbed you blind, since they are hurting for money these days (MD pay =/=pay).

At least if you had hired an MD to clean your place, he would have used actual chemicals to clean the joint; because DOs don't like to use medication, let alone any sythnetic chemicals in general, as we all know.

I use a DO as an entrance mat to my apartment. I also have one by the toilet to wipe my candy @$$.

Well In my opinion DOs will be considered equals to MDs when they can prescribe medicine. Until then the ceiling will be lower.

To the OP:

When I was looking for D.O.'s to shadow at Hopkins over the summer I found these gentlemen:

http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/surgery/faculty/Marohn

👍 Badasses. Especially the first guy. He has his JD too.

If that isn't hard evidence that there is no ceiling then I don't know what is.

Jeeze ... that first guy is going to reach a point where he has more letters behind his name, than in his first and last name combined.

I disagree. Being able to prescribe medicine would be a good step, but first DOs must be allowed to work in hospitals. Currently, only medical doctors can work in hospitals, not DOs.

Oh no! That should never ever be allowed. Them D.O people may "manipulate" the public opinion that they are real doctors 😱:scared:. Buyer beware!

Pff ... a 'DO' working in a hospital, give me a break. If I have a serious injury, I don't want some witch doctor doing voo doo manipulation on my body. Wow, this DO problem has to stop.

...ok..i think you guys might actually make some pre-meds think this is for real...

The DO below is Chief of Medicine at a VERY prestigous hospital:

Yes. Actually that's Dr. Ruggemblum, internal medicine instructor at OU-COM.

Nice calves, by the way. He must work out.

Sure he invented calculus and physics, but that hairstyle is hideous.

And DO's are cuter.

This would NEVER happen! Remember DOs are trained in the secret arts of OMM. Thus we have bigger biceps than any MDs.

LOL, yeah and isnt it true that MD's are further along on the evolutionary timescale than DO's?

I'm kind of upset by this thread. I'm pre-med and trying to decide which would be the best fit for me (MD vs. DO) and it seems time after time that an honest question is made into a mockery. I've had questions I've wanted to ask about osteopathic medicine but I've never posted them because I don't want to be ridiculed for 2 pages and on some level it really leaves a bad mark on the whole field. Maybe everyone can lay this to rest and realize that this person was trying to ask an honest question. A question that still remains unanswered.

unanswered?

I guess you didn't see the links with DOs at hopkins

It pays to read the whole thread, it helps with the occulocervical reflex 😎

While the question may seem honest to you, many of these "honest" questions are posed by trolls purely for ticking off either the DOs or the MDs. The question gets ridiculed because to those who have seen so many of these questions before, they are tired of being taunted. Rather than get angry, they joke. Far better than striking back in my opinion.

A little research will show that there are plenty of DOs that teach in MD med schools, and likewise many MDs that teach in DO med schools. DOs can lead a state's medical association. DO schools can host AMSA conferences. DOs can do anything an MD can, and to my knowledge there is no position that specifically states that "A DO cannot hold this position." If anyone can find a position that does specifically state that, please feel free to cite the appropriate reference.

And now that this thread has entirely run it's course, I will happily close it.
