I received a Perkins loan and am wondering if this loan is eligible for cancellation (in other words, I don't have to repay) for physicians. They list a variety of professions for which the Perkins loan is forgivable, such as for nurses and medical technicians, and health care providers for the underpriveleged.

Is the Perkins loan forgivable for future physicians?

Thanks.

Perkins loan has been traditionally a loan from the university from which you attended based upon info from feds. So you need to contact the University that gave you the perkins loan to know for sure. When i consolidated my loans i had to fill out seperate paperwork for my perkins loan because it was from the university I had attended. I hope that helps.

No, you cannot get the loan cancelled for being Physician or Dentist. This clause is very clear on the Department of Educations Website . . . only RN's, LPN's, Respiratory Techs, EMT's, Cardiovascular Techs etc fall under the nurses and healthcare technician clause. Physicians and Dentists are not included as is discussed on the Departments website and the small print on the Master Prommisory Note. The Perkins Loan is still a good loan with 0% interest while in school and a fixed 5% interest during repayment. Also it has a longer grace period (9 months) which is interest free and there are still loan cancellation options and very good interest free deferment opportunities. However, most likely you will have to repay it.
