Is the USNews2018 anesthesia program ranking reliable or relevant?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They ranked... wait... wait... 14 medical schools. Yeah, truly relevant.

I'm a 3rd yr DO trying to figure out where different programs are situated relative to one another. Was wondering if USNews was a good list.

Step1:248
Step2:TBH
Research: 4x 1st author poster presentations. 1x publication

This rank list appears to be ranking the 'best' med schools for preparing for anesthesiology. Since you are a 3rd yr DO, it's a bit late since none of these schools on the list are DO.

I’d say this is very inaccurate for anesthesia. It’s just ranking the best Med schools.

Sure if you go to any of these programs you will get into a good program or atleast get to stay on board there. But as an example Hopkins sends the fewest number of their graduates into anesthesia. My year only 1 person even applied anesthesia and there are only a small number every year. Most of their graduates don’t even do an anesthesia rotation and need to request to do one. If I wasn’t forced to do anesthesia I wouldn’t have even know I liked it. Don’t get me wrong they have a great residency and I’m not attacking Hopkins, I’m just saying this list should be taken with a grain of salt by premeds.

If you’re looking for an arbitrary ranking for residencies just look at Doximity.

Here are Programs which typically require HIGH Step Scores to match:

4. Stanford
5. Hopkins
6. UCSF
7. Beth Israel (BID)
8. Mayo (Rochester)
8. Wash U
9. Mt Sinai
11. Michigan
12 Vanderbilt
13 Penn
14. Columbia
15. Cornell
16. Northwestern

Take a look on Freida for step scores. It gives you an idea of how difficult it may be to interview there. Not the whole picture but its an important part of it
