Case Western Med school is very very very expensive. Is it worth taking out a HUGE loan just for the degree from Case? In-state schools are much cheaper, but no where as near prestigious as Case.
If it is dramatically more expensive, then unquestionably no. No doctor would tell you to pay a lot more for case over your state school.
Yes Case is dramatically more expensive. But it is just so prestigious, that is it really really really worth it? I mean case is WORLD renown. The state schools just dont have the glamor the world gives to case....
I feel like a noob but... i've never seen case being world renown or well known. Its a midtier private school. If it was top 10 there'd be something to think about.. But it all depends is Case a good fit for you?
on US News, I think it is ranked as high as Mayo... and while it is not Cleveland Clinic, I have heard of many joint affiliations with it
US new also ranks JHU,harvard and other top tiers very lowly. They rank on terms of primary care or something else, not a reliable source.
Do you wanna spend the money? Who cares about prestige. The majority of your patients won't know anything about case western. I certainly never heard of it. Johns Hopkins or Mayo or Duke... yes. Case Western?... no.
Edit: Just found out case is ranked 25th nationally. That's not exactly much prestige if it's gonna be a financial hardship. If you have the money, go to the school with more opportunities for you. Like I said, you may be happy with the "prestige" of going to the 25th school, but your patients won't have any idea it's "good."
US News breaks down rankings either through research OR primary care
when comparing med schools, I always use the research category... and I think most people use this as the gold standard... it is in that which case is either higher or equivalent to Mayo i think
Most people who don't know what they're doing (read: most pre-meds) use US News research rankings as the gold standard, yes. Absolutely do not go to med school for prestige. That was something like the 10th most important factor is residency selection, so it should be similarly unimportant to you unless you're planning to do academics or research.US News breaks down rankings either through research OR primary care

parents paying for everything for instate not nowhere as known med school as case (no loan) vs. full loan for case
is the question to ponder
Well, there ya have it, then.dont want to do research AT ALL... and probably not academics either because of the lower pay....
Not all financial aid is based on your family's income. I wouldn't count on anything, but you never know.i really dont think financial aid is easy for children of physicians.....
Your school being "known" will have almost no affect on what you do after med school. Shoot, your parents are paying for your instate med school so you could graduate with 0 indeptness? If you wanna go to case and have multi-thousand dollar loan repayments after residency feel free. But I'd rather save the money and buy a boat.
or a hummer... i would so love a hummer 😍
Lets try a car that wont kill our environment and kill someone on impact while going 5miles per hour.
Like a hybrid civic =)
lol... i dont believe in global warming... and if it is occuring, let it happen... i can still stand the rise in global temperatures as long as I can drive my hummer.... assuming I am not melting in the heat![]()
Is global warming something you can "believe in?" 😕lol... i dont believe in global warming... and if it is occuring, let it happen... i can still stand the rise in global temperatures as long as I can drive my hummer.... assuming I am not melting in the heat![]()

lol i know its happening...... but i really could not give a s*** about something as minuscule as "ooo the temperature rises an average of 0.00023152423432425235345 degrees a year.... stop all energy consumption"![]()

I never heard of Case until I came to SDN.
Me either. And I was fairly well read on different medical schools besides the big names.

What are these "categories" that you're talking about?i'm surprised you had not heard of it, looking at all the schools you applied to... case i think is in the same category as Ohio State...
http://www.usnews.com/articles/educ...4/22/medical-school-rankings-methodology.htmli was just looking at the US News Rankings and I am surprised to see Dartmouth at 35 considering it is an ivy league school... how did that happen 😕
Case is in the category of great med schools like U Pitt, U Chicago, and Mt Sinai. The average person would be like "huh? who cares about that school" but the medical community knows that they are prestigious universities. Talking about tiers is pointless because there are no tiers...
Who cares, really. Yeah, Case is expensive. But if it's a good fit for you, go. If not, don't go.

Yea it's super weird. Brown and Darthmouth are both ranked lower than I expected. Even Georgetown is low 30's???? Mayo is not even top 20. I don't really get this system.
he's the head of the G.I dept at his hospital, apparently lives in the most magnificent house my friend has seen and has a pretty hot younger wife 🙂thumbup🙂
i would say though strictly reputation speaking upitt is regarded higher than case...
and its cheaper too i believe 🙁
The average person is MUCH more likely to know about University of Chicago than Case. And most people in the medical community would not compare Pitt, Chicago, Mt. Sinai with Case....
Case Western is a great school, but to the OP, it's not as "world renowned" as you think. If you loved the school, I would go. But if you got into state schools (and ones that are pretty good say Ohio State?), then you should go there.
