PhD/PsyD Is there a better way to search the Appic Directory?

Specifically, is there a way to search by minimum hours? The current search finds values > or = your number. I'd much prefer to find sites that require less than the number I input. I'm unsure how their version is useful. Any help would be awesome.

Nope, it's an awful search system. Super inefficient and in many ways broken. Sorry 🙁

Get a good printer, print out data sheets on sites that you might have an interest in and then begin sorting them in stacks. Damn millenials can't do anything without google! 😉

As an international student who'd like to know which sites accept students who aren't citizens, this appears to be an utterly useless search function. I don't know who would benefit from that - I guess it could be useful if one really wanted to make sure that one's fellow interns aren't anything but US citizens.

Well, it provides an easy list of places you can't apply to. So, seems there is at least a little bit of use.

In theory, yes. But it actually doesn't make the process more efficient because I will need to manually compare the list of "US Citizen Only" to the "Everybody" list.

Oh and I thought the site was pretty weak back in 2004 when I was applying and I don't think they have changed a thing. 🙄

We had a printed book. Seriously…it was green I think. The online directory came out and it was like the skies parted and a giant sunbeam came down. Of course, then we tried using the search functions and realized they stunk. I literally went through all of the APA-acred. sites manually and cutting my list as I went along. I figure wasting a a few days pouring over sites to shrink my list was worth the effort. It was indeed worth the effort.

I honestly don't remember having any problems with the APPIC search function. Although, I only focused on internships with a significant neuro focus, and I pretty much already had a list down by that time.

Yes, ya'll are right, having an online search is definitely better than a book (or no master database at all)! That being said, there are definitely some really frustrating things about the search functions that could be pretty easily changed by someone who is a programmer, like, for example, the search options for minimum hours and above (as the OP said) rather than minimum hours and below. Particularly because the export function doesn't actually export any data other than the very basic info on the site (like name and APPIC number), so the idea of exporting a master list of all the sites and then removing sites you aren't eligible for would be very difficult. We all figure it out, but definitely extra-stress-inducing.

I'm sure if you ask nicely, and get APPIC to increase their fees to cover the salary, they'll be happy to hire a programmer 🙂
