Does anyone know of a combined MD/DDS program in the U.S. or anywhere in the English speaking world?

The program should be six instead of eight years.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Terry

they don't exist, although i think if you have your dds, you can take a residency that will get you a md or something like that

After receiving a DDS, one can enter a 6-yr combined MD/MS program which leads to becoming an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.

4 yrs DDS
2 yrs MD
2 yrs Resident, Gen. Surgery
2 yrs Resident, O&M Surgery

Thanks MJF,

That's very accurate info and I appreciate it.

It's just too long and does not target the "primary care" aspects I wanted.

Do you know any Dental school that might take on an MD and in two years award a DDS?

Private schools might be the best bet, I'll begin a check with the ADA<

Thanks,
Terry

There isn't any school, private or public, who would award you a DDS within two years, MD or no MD. There are too many dental-specific course requirements in dental school in their first two years...conjoint dental morphology, prophylaxis, fundamentals in operative dentistry (the most important and time consuming course in the freshman year), dental radiology, principles of occlusion, etc, etc, and all of those courses are in the first year! Forget it bud. You're going to have to make a choice: dental school then med school, or just med school. If you want primary care, choose one or the other, but not both. It doesn't do you any good.

I really don't understand why you want both an MD and a DDS for primary care aspects. What kind of primary care aspects are your targeting that an MD and DDS will provide for you? I'm really confused as to your interest in getting both when you don't want to do oral surgery, and you're not willing to commit the time necessary to getting both.

I have heard that UNC-Chapel Hill allows dental students to obtain an MD within a pretty short period after their DDS. I am not completely sure about this, but you could contact the school of dentistry an/or medicine to find out. Although research is important at UNC, I believe their focus is towards primary care, so the program may fit your goals. Once again, I'm not sure about this, so your'e going to have to verify this for yourself. Do post what they tell you, ie-whether they do or do not let you get an MD in addition to a DDS in less than 8 years.
