hi guys,
for anyone who has interned in an inpatient pharmacy after or during your 1st year of pharmacy school, how is your role different than the techs role? do you do most of the same work that the tech does? this is for the summer in between your 1st year and 2nd

For 1st years, interns will typically go through tech training and work tech shifts. Afterwards, interns may do research projects and clinical intern duties. It depends on the hospital so I suggest you speak with your intern supervisor.

As Reirrac said, it depends on where you work. Don't knock tech work, though - it's vital for learning the layout of the hospital, the basics of the computer system, troubleshooting the Pyxis/Omnicell/pharmacy automation, and learning common IV solutions.

I was a hospital intern for the four years I was in pharmacy school. I would work both "tech" shfits and "intern" shifts. I learned a lot from both, in my opinion all pharmacist should have to work as a tech for a minimum of 2000 hours before being licensed.
Like was said, it will vary from hospital to hospital. Where I work as a pharmacist, they are one in the same, do the same job.
Where I was an intern as an intern I could check stock, check cart fill, pull narc refills, etc. I could asnwer more questions a little more independently of the pharmacists (provided they trusted me), but I could not check my own work (cart fills would have to be checked by a different tech or a pharmacist)

I know of one of our residency candidates who had a very good internship where they did coumadin monitoring as well. So, it will vary from place to place. That being said, all are very educational and even if you "are just a tech" take it and run with it.
