Is there a real difference between applying to 15 vs 20 schools?

i have an average gpa, an above average dat and all the other little kicks. i was thinking of applying to 20 schools, but i know its gonna be killer expensive. all i care about are pre-dec interviews. i was thinking even if i went to only 7 interviews and got accepted dec 1st i would just drop all of my subsequent interviews. would it be a better and more realistic idea to just apply to 15 instead?

would it be smart to just apply to 15 now and if by the end of the summer i dont see that many interviews coming just add a couple more schools then?

also, if we interviewed at a school previously and didnt do so well is it still worth it to apply to that school again or will they not bother with you this time?

plz this isnt a troll post. i just wanna make sure im using my money wisely and being realistic.

20 schools is completely fine. I applied to 15, and the fee AADSAS charged me for it was $1307.
