Hey so I know that schools like URMs to promote diversity within a class. That's great, whatever. My question is: does the playing field become level once med school starts and for applying to residencies? i.e if residency applicant A and residency applicant B had roughly the same app but applicant A was a URM, would they pick the URM like they do for med school, or is that all finished by that point? Do residency directors seek out URMs, or do most not care?

though not about URM, I heard that women have easier time getting into male dominant surgery while female dominant obgyn doesn't give any advantage to males.

The answer is highly subjective but I would err on the whole no. Most places are really looking for the best fit for their program no matter if you are brown black or purple etc.

I've asked a few med students applying to residency and the answer is no.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised that diversity is something certain hospitals would seek in a future resident, so it would probably depend on the program director and the specific program you plan on matching in.

You would do well to assume that the playing field is never level, and that you have to just do your absolute best and let the chips fall where they will.

Oh my, multitudinous are the ways that the URM flame wars can get started!

Yes you are right. The playing field is never level. Not too long ago, women were not allowed to be part of medicine. It was ONLY for White men. I guess it must hurt now to see women and people of color getting an opportunity. 🙂Parties over for the "old boys club."

Is this supposed to be a jab at me because you have some assumption as to my sex and race? How *should* the perception of the playing field being level or slanted change your work ethic and performance?

Quoted for truth.

And superior vocabulary.

And a man-hater is born.

And a man-hater is born.

A man-hater who doesn't know that "parties" is a plural noun, and not a noun/verb contraction.

Residency directors only care about your board scores and third year grades, nothing else.

At the end of the day if your a US med school grad, and you have a great board score, you will get what you want.

If you don't, you will probably get what you don't want.

Its kind of like looking for a girl, if your a good person, you will get the one you want, if your a bad person, you will get the one who cheats on you. lol lol lol

You need to get life, and stop correcting peoples grammar.

I need to get a wife in 7 years!!!! So we are in the same boat 🙂

while I myself am not a fan of the bar burning, loud mouth, feminist movement, she is telling the truth.

Women are still discriminated against. They even still make less, and thats in the medical field too.

This is the hidden truth.

Have you taken into consideration the fact that women are more likely to drop down to part-time work after becoming a physician? I would think if they work less, they make less no?

The New York Times said:
Starting salaries for women who become physicians are significantly lower than men’s, and the pay gap has grown over the past decade, a study reports.

The pay differential, which was 12.5 percent in 1999, increased to nearly 17 percent by 2008, according to the report, published Thursday in Health Affairs.

The growing gap could not be explained by women’s preferences, the authors said. While women on average do choose lower-paying specialties and shorter workweeks than men, those disparities were less pronounced in 2008 than in 1999. Yet the pay differential has widened.

This. I don't think there is any discrimination, silent or otherwise, against women or any race in medicine. The numbers are proportional to the distribution of quality applicants. There is no discrimination in fewer women than men wanting competitive, demanding specialties that make raising a family difficult. If you're mad about that, your problem is not with the institution but with the average American woman and (your perception of) her valuing the domesticated life too highly.

Haven't taken the MCAT yet but I expected a higher score from Professor English. 😉

they don't test your spelling and grammar... Nor does it test how well you google, copy and paste pop culture references, but you would know that if you had in fact taken said exam.

That has nothing to do with what he said.

For the OP, I have never seen any evidence or even anecdotal stories that suggest that being a URM currently has an advantage (or disadvantage) in residency. I have heard that OB/gyn programs are looking to increase the number of men they are enrolling because the programs have relatively few, so you may see a little boost there.

Forgive my ignorance, and Im sure that im wrong here, but im South Asian with a low GPA. Would you say that even if I managed to get a strong upward trend + killer MCAT score and great ECs, that I would still have an uphill battle versus someone who is a URM? I guess my question is how much does race play a role in admission? It seems that once you get into med school, it really makes no difference for residency…..correct me if I am wrong.

URMs have an advantage to a lot of things. Not sure about residency though.

I thought it was a pretty valid question. There were some good answers for a while, so thank you to those who actually responded with good intentions.

You are right! If you look at a typical medical school class, it is usually composed of over 50% URM. 😉 It is that easy for them. You should see how easy it is for us chics.

I really think being Jewish should be considered an URM for admission purposes. Just my own opinion that may, of course, be biased by the fact that I am Jewish.

Jewish people are WHITE!!!!!

Nope, most of us evil white guys don't really care. But if you wanna walk around with a chip on your shoulder under the illusion that we do, I guess that's your problem 🙂
