I've heard rumors that out of state students applying to california residency programs has almost little or no chance unless they're really the top of their classes. I've also heard that if you're originally from california, even though you attend a different state's medical school, you'll have an easier time getting an interview. Can someone comment and address this issue? Thanks.

Hey man-

I've never lived in California but wouldn't mid going out there myself... I have one friend (a native Californian) who came out east for medical school who didn't have any problems getting Cali. interviews this year. Also have had several grads from my southeastern state medical school who were not from out there match there as well. Work on some great board scores to open up doors for yourself out there.

Depends on your specialty choice. The quality of residency programs in California is all over the board. But the general premise is not entirely true.

I don't think anyone is really sure, but I would imagine that Californian natives might have an edge with those programs, only because they would have an additional incentive to choosing a Cali program (family, friends nearby) than someone who has no ties to the West Coast.
