Is this bad? Frankly, yes.

The awarding of a degree indicates that you have a well-rounded education that includes a standard regimen of required courses, courses that apply to your major, and courses that may or may not apply. That you think these are "stupid" gives an indication that you may think education is designed for your entertainment and for the goals you deermine, without any concern (or respect for the years and years of academic excellence that have decided that those classes aren't "stupid."

Tell ya what: when you go into your interview and they ask why you should be considered competitive with others who have completed bachelor's degree, I think you should tell them you didn't want to take the music or art classes because you think they're "stupid."

If you want to be REALLY popular, get someone to video the interview, and then post it so we can all get a big chuckle out of it here.

Here's a hint: Academics of any genre aren't going to take a comment about other academics being "stupid."

I thinks it the totall package...have a good resume, extra circular stuff, and good jobs......

I do not have a degree and took all of my courses at a university branch campus and got accepted.

I should clarify: the lack of a degree isn't going to be what hurts you. What will hurt you (and would probably kill your application if I was on the AdCom) is the attitude that the music and art electives are "stupid." You'd be surprised how things like that come out when you don't expect them.

If I received an application for review and got the impression that the person had the time, effort and ability to complete a degree and elected not to simply because s/he thought the electives were "stupid," that would be one less application that would make it to the next step of review.

I don't have a degree either. I have taken a lot of electives that would be considered "just for fun," however, and wouldn't have given me credit toward any science degree. I know that my pharmacy school likes to have a "well-rounded" student, so I took the time to experience as much as I could in college. And besides, it never hurts to take other classes that you think you might not be interested in. It could just further solidify your decision to become a pharmacist. 🙂

I don't have a degree yet, but I will in May 2008. Bachelor of Science in Chemistry--represent haha.
I don't know if not having a degree is a bad thing or not when applying to pharmacy schools, but at my interview my interviewers were extremely impressed that I would have a degree in May. So, I'd definitely say having a degree is an advantage.

I won't have a degree when I apply for pharmacy school in Fall 08, nor will I receive one the end of that school year in Spring 09. However, I am still planning on obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry after the completion of 1 year in professional (pharmacy school). So I guess I plan to get one, just in a not-so-usual way.

If the school doesn't require a degree, they cannot base their decision on the lack of a degree. If you share with them that you did not want to get a degree based on xyz reason, they may judge your character based on what you say, but if it's not part of the criteria it shouldn't directly effect your consideration for admittance. It depends on the school and their requirements.

P.S. Just take the classes! It'll be nice to have an extra diploma to frame

They wouldn't reject someone because of a lack of a degree. However, they might accept someone else who does have a degree, thinking that person is a stronger candidate. If the school is looking to fill it's last vacant seat, the person with the degree might get he nod over someone who doesn't.

I agree with eelo's comment. I would also like to add that completing a degree shows that you can dedicate yourself to completing something. Pharmacy school won't be a case where you can pick and choose what classes you want or believe are the only useful parts of your degree.

As pharmacy school admissions become more competitive, more applicants will have bachelor degrees. I suggest at least getting your associates and makign yourself more well rounded. Also push yourself to step outside of the box and try something new (including those art and music classes😀)

I don't really think a degree really matters bc I got accepted this year with only having most of my pre-req classes done at a community college, i haven't even finished my second year of college yet....so in my opinion it doesn't really matter, yeah it looks good but if u have a good gpa and pcat score and pretty much all the classes then ur good to go!

The program Im ooking into is complete the pre-reqs 2 years and then go in as a transfer student advanced standing and complete four. They never mentioned you must have a degree. Im focusing only on getting A's in my Pre-reqs so Im accepted to my school of choice. Has anyone been denied due to lack of degree?

they're not going to deny you due to a lack of degree unless they specify that you need a degree before matriculation like at OSU. If they say you don't need a degree, then you don't need one. As some other people have said, it'll look better if you've completed your degree since it makes you a more well-rounded candidate.

Go eelo!

Obviously a pharmacy school seeks to accept students who are in high academic standing (ie. high GPA), but pharmacy schools are very competitive these days. That said, they will look at other aspects of your application like pcat, extracurricular activities, experience in the field, etc. If you walk into the room and the interviewer asks you why you're better than the last person and the person coming in after you..ultimately why you deserve to be accepted and they don't...what will you tell them? I hope it's not..I went to a CC and received good grades and NO degree. Students who have degrees worked longer and harder to get to where they are (IMO). 👍 Personally, I didn't enjoy many undergrad courses..but eventually they all started to tie in together. And as for the classes you deem "stupid," I think you just need to be more open-minded because these classes aren't all a waste of time. And all of us have taken an Art or Music at one time or another. Obviously the institution requires these courses for a reason..I'm sure they don't make us takes classes to waste our time on purpose. :meanie:

thanks for your opinions guys. and i apologize for calling the art or music classes to be "stupid". the only reason why i said that was because people around me used to tell me those AS degrees are not necessary and specially for my school, there are some exams and specialized courses to be completed for the graduation. i was just worried that taking those classes would make me stay in CC for too long.

Art is nice to look at and music is nice to listen too, but it is STUPID to be tested on.

When a school rejects you, they rarely state the exact reason (that is they would never say"sorry we cannot accept you bc you dont have a BS). What they will say is this "Thank you for applying. However, this year sees so many well-qualified applicants blah blah blah so we cannot grant you admission blah blah". They will give you a generic message, most likely. Personally, I've not known anybody who got in w/o a degree. And by degree I mean a bachelor degree, not associate degree. But of course, I dont know every student is the nation, so I'm sure there are people who got in w/o a degree but they will be minority. Unless your GPA is solid and you have other things to brush up your applicants, you shouldnt bet on it. Personally, I believe a 4-year degree is the most important factor in admission decision.

If you don't mind me asking, what state are you living in and what COP did you get accepted to. Congratulations, I wish the same for myself.

Good luck on your journey!

I live in Michigan and got accepted to University of Southern Nevada. My stats are: 3.81 overall gpa and 3.9 science gpa. This was the only school I applied to. Where r u from, and what schools have u applied to?

Thanks, I live in North Carolina. I begin College in the Summer to start on my pre-req's. I just will try my best at getting the best GPA possible and go from there. Again, congratulations!

That is what I am planning on doing, getting out a year early. I've got nothing to lose. If I get in early, great. If not, I'll have a degree and get in the year after.

I plan on getting out a year early as well, except, I REALLY want to get out a year early, and I'd get my BS regardless.

I got a BS in 1999 with a degree I never used...but it has helped me since, being able to land non-related jobs just because the degree on my resume proved dedication, hard work and ability to accomplish a goal. I think just having a degree in general is helpful with finding work, getting into other school programs, etc,.,
