Just wondering this, i reached out to a few really good programs after I hadn't heard anything from them and they responded with an invite to interview. Granted, there was a few that did not reply with an invite, so I was wondering, if these programs invite you after you reach out, are they really even considering you? Some of the places look like they take mostly people from that state, or minimal DO's.

Sounds like maybe you were already on the cusp, and your email pushed you on the side of an invite. If a program extends you and interview, they are considering you.

Agree, nobody has time to waste interviewing someone who has no chance of matching. Your odds may not be as good as the people they had previously already asked to interview, but I think you certainly have a shot.

Nope. They are trying to maximize their yield with interviews and (especially if your school is not nearby) your email convinced them you are serious about them so they extended the invites. If you do well on the interviews you have as good a shot as anyone else they invited.

Thank you guys for reassuring me, I think I'm just psyching myself out with my feelings of insecurity. These are definitely some of my top choices and am really nervous

They definitely exist motivations range from courtesy for rotating with a program to somebody knows somebody and asks that they take a second look at an applicant. In competitive fields or programs, no one hesitates when It comes to wasting an applicants time and money.

No, the effort to interview is too great to do that. However, if you know you are on the "reach" side, make sure to have a strong story for why you belong THERE. Always be positive and don't imply in anything you say that you know that they are a reach.

Good luck.

Thank you! I did my best so hopefully it was enough, definitely. How would I know if I am a reach?

This sounds made up....programs couldn’t see eras applications until yesterday and you posted this a week ago. Nobody was giving out interviews a week ago. Are you just asking just in case this happens for you?

People are interviewing for peds fellowships this period. So his question was valid.

Agree with the above poster, the OP is listed as a resident so I assumed this was regarding fellowship interviews.

oh yeah sorry applying for Peds fellowship, shoulda clarified

I know you are applying for fellowships, but I have friends who applied to programs where they had seniors who recommended them to the PC/PD. They didn't meet the criteria for interviews but still, they got interviews, but they didn't match in those programs.
There is another term we use for this, "courtesy interview", where they will call you just to make someone happy but won't rank you.
