Hi everyone, I'm in my second semester at a state college majoring in biology. I was not able to get into a chemistry class this year because they were all full by the time I was able to register. I am seriously thinking about taking Chem 1 and 2 over the summer at a CC near my house because my school does not offer it. This way, I would be able to take orgo 1 and 2 starting in the fall instead of being a year behind.

I will then continue to take the upper level courses at my state college. I have plant bio, physics, microbiology, immunology, and biochem left to take along with chem and orgo. Doing this would allow me to apply for pharmacy school for fall '11 instead of another year.

Any thoughts of how this would look to the admissions committee if I took chem not only over the summer but also at a cc? Thanks!

It won't look bad if you take classes over the summer, I have taken summer classes every semester I have been at UF. It can look bad if you are taking them at a CC. Some programs only accepts the pre-reqs( such as Chem I and II) from a 4 year university. I got into several pharmacy schools and I took major courses over the summer( Biology and orgo for ex.) but all of them were at UF. I would stear clear of CC if you can.

Just to summarize all of the feedback you will get here: The majority of people on this forum have a very high opinion of CC courses and will tell you to take it there.

I think you should be fine doing this (Chems at CC over summer) Just make sure you do well and learn a lot since you will need this basic chem knowledge in many future courses.

I agree with ffpickle. You will be fine taking the chem series at a CC. I actually think it's the smart thing to do so you won't be behind and have to wait a year. I know some people will say you won't be as competitive if you do courses at a CC, but that is really debatable as plenty of people get into pharm school with just CC courses. Since most of your courses are being completed at a university, I wouldn't worry about a few taken at a CC. I took a pre-req at a CC and got in.

That being said, I know there are a few of pharm schools that will not accept CC or summer classes. That's only a few out of the 100+ options you have. If you want to be uber safe, you could look at the policies of the schools you are thinking of applying to. If they don't have those policies, don't worry about it.

I took Chemistry I and II at a CC and got an interview at my one and only choice. Still waiting to see if I get in. I took Chemistry II during the summer also. I don't think it will be a big deal, just try to get an A. I did exactly what your trying to do, complete them so I could take Organic I and II at the university level and it worked out fine. I'm finishing up Organic II now at a university.
