A diploid cell's (with 23 homologous pairs, and therefore 46 chromosomes and 92 chromatids) homologous chromosomes connect to each other to form 23 tetrads. After recombination, the 23 tetrads split, leaving 23 chromosomes in each cell. The 23 chromosomes are further split, leaving 23 chromatids in each cell.
