I just dispensed #1000 oxycodone in a giant container. Its the most I've ever done and I wanted to post this to facebook. The container isn't labeled and all it is is the picture of the bottle.

Is there any patient information on the container?

I wouldn't recommend doing it, but not specifically for this reason. You don't know who might end up seeing that, and figure out that Pharmacy X keeps 1,000 oxycodone tablets in stock and decided to rob you.

I'd post it here though so we can all see it. I'd be amused to see 1k oxycodone.

Why would you keep that many oxys in stock?

It is not a HIPPA violation. It may however, be a violation of your companies policies and procedures. Generally, this is a really poor idea, wholly unprofessional and just a wee bit immature....

Ha, we order oxy 30's by the case (24 x 100ct bottles). At about a dollar per mg, that would have a street value of $72,000. We are really in the wrong business.

Ha! But at least we can sleep at night. 🙂

As long as there is no patient info on the bottle...it's not a violation. With that being said I still wouldn't post the pic..as a general rule, I NEVER post anything about work, you never know who is watching. It's just not a good idea. I've heard of people being fired for referring to a patient in a facebook status...no names were ever mentioned, but it was still very unprofessional. Even the people who "liked" the status were "talked to".....

👍

If you put it on FB, it's recorded and there's proof of you doing something. Once someone makes a copy of it or takes a screen shot and saves it, you cannot take it back even if you try to remove the post.

Practically all of the major retail chains have policies forbidding cameras in the pharmacy. Taking a picture will be evidence that you violated that policy and you can be written up.

You haven't worked in the ghetto, have you... :meanie:

Outpatient pharmacies in hospitals keep a lot of pain medication on hand, too... all the discharges from surgeries and people with cancer pain.

I've never dispensed 1000, but we've done close to that. It's rare, but it's happened.

Yes, I know. I work at a hospital.

I was just making a joke....

pharmacy we were at dispensed a 240ct of dilaudid 8mg / month :O and that was just the patient's breakthrough! :O

edit: i enjoy comparing to see what people have seen dispensed as far as highest count / strength for narcotics. .. saw 1g methadone + 1g morphine for breakthrough at a hospital once.. that doesnt make sense to me, but then again neither did the patient on 8mg dilaudid PO take 2 Q4H , plus 200mcg/day of fentanyl patches plus oxycontin 80mg q 8 hr :O. guy was a legitimate wreck though.. bad construction site crush accident left him disabled for life, and he was only in his 30s 🙁

1 GRAM of morphine and methadone? You'd choke on all those tablets before you could obtain any pain relief!

When I worked at a place that did home infusion, we had a hospice patient on a continuous morphine drip, 200mg/hour. We just pulled it out of the vials and shot it into an empty bag.

Most discharge meds are for small quantities; anything more than 30 is unusual in my experience.
